Rumor of Chargers move to LA sparks interest online

By  |

The San Diego Chargers have long been rumored to be one of the teams that could be moving to Los Angeles to help cultivate football fever in the City of Angels again.

That rumor briefly took on some more ballast yesterday when Toronto’s Fan 590 reported that Philip Anschutz “has or will purchase” 35 percent of the team. The station noted that the sale is part of a process that will culminate in the Chargers moving to L.A., where Anschutz and his company, AEG, are trying to get a stadium built.

But the San Diego Union Tribune has it that no sale is underway and that Philip Rivers and the boys will be staying put where they are.

Chargers team counsel Mark Fabiani emailed reporters last night with the following statement, the Union-Tribune reports: “There is no truth to the rumor out of Toronto that the Chargers have agreed to sell a portion of the team to Mr. Anschutz.”
