In San Diego we truly do have a lot of options when we think about how to stay fit. With miles of beaches and hiking trails along the entire county, it’s not a surprise that San Diegans are always out and about. But sometimes finding those exercises to target our specific problems can be quite a challenge. The Sporting Club San Diego is here again to help with this week’s fitness tip.

As usual these fitness tips are simple, effective and definitely achievable for any gym-goer.  Personal trainer, Kris Machain, is back to teach us one of his favorite methods to burn fat and boost your heart rate effectively. This week’s exercise is called sprint interval training and it will definitely get your heart racing! With the help of Aaron, Kris shows us a short set of sprint intervals on a woodway treadmill.

Step 1: Disengage the belt on the treadmill. This is done so that your feet are the only contributors to the movement of the treadmill.

Step 2: Push off and sprint on the treadmill as quickly as you can. This is done for 10 seconds.

Step 3: Stop and recover for 10 seconds.

Step 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3 as desired for your set.

This exercise requires high knees and drive into the treadmill to reach high speed and a higher heart rate. One of the hardest things to pull off while doing this exercise is to maintaining speed. As you are doing your set, remember that you want to keep your speed as close as you can to your initial speed. There are so many muscles involved in the sprint that doing this during your training will lead to good sore muscles. Make sure you include great cardio exercises like these in your training to increase metabolism, burn off that stubborn fat, and challenge yourself at the gym everyday!
