Opening Day Wednesday to Kick off Racing Season at Del Mar

By  |

Summer is upon us and one of San Diego’s most beloved traditions is almost here. Opening Day at The Del Mar Races is on Wednesday and this year, more than 40,000 race enthusiasts are expected to attend. While you’ll always find high rollers and fast horses at the race track, Opening Day and the racing season aren’t just for the big betters.

If you’re new to the track, you can check out the Wagering Guide— it has everything you’ll need to know before you place your first bet. But don’t worry, if you’re not a big better, there’s plenty of other activities around the track that you can take part in. At The Del Mar Races, there’s something for everyone, especially during the hustle and bustle of Opening Day. The first race goes off at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, but here’s some other things that will be going on around the track before and after the horses take off:

Located in the Plaza de Mexico, the Opening Day Hats Contest starts when the gates open and runs until 3:00 p.m. Your stylish and fashion-forward creation could win in one of five categories: Most Glamorous, Best Racing Theme, Most Outrageous, Best Fascinator, and Flowers. Need more incentive? There’s $5,000 in total prizes on the line including a luxurious one-night stay at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. And, even better? Endless bragging rights.

After you strut your stuff, head on over to The Party On Opening Day for the full VIP experience. Tickets are a steal at only $35 per person and include a day of thrills and exclusive access to the Seaside Cabana. Choose to spend your day grooving on the dance floor or cracking open a cold one in the shaded seating area and beer garden.

Feeling lucky? As the saying goes: There’s a winner in every race! Today might be the day to test that beginner’s luck at the wagering window.

Keep the party going after the races at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe’s official Opening Day After Party. Enjoy food, drinks, and entertainment alongside your favorite jockeys and support a good cause all at the same time. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockey Fund.

Throughout the season, concerts will follow the races and headliners include Tribal Seeds (July 21), The Violent Femmes (July 28), Slightly Stoopid (August 26), and more. For the full list, click here.

We hope to see you down where to surf meets the turf, whether you’ll be placing a bet or just stopping by for some fun!
