SD Musical Theater Shows To See This Month

By  |

We’re all used to going out for dinner and a movie. But when was the last time you went to a theater to see a musical production? Live entertainment is always a nice change after visiting the movie theater so often. Musical productions are such an exciting art form to witness: the acting and singing are always phenomenal, and if you are lucky enough to catch a well-written show, the story line is one that you’ll be talking about for days. We are lucky to live in a city full of great theaters, and this season boasts a lot of impressive and exciting titles.

At The San Diego Musical Theatre, Pump Up the Volume will be running from July 28-September 10th. The show is directed and choreographed by Colleen Kollar Smith. If you’re a 90’s kid, you’re gonna want to check this one out. The show is an homage to all the great (and not so great) things that came out of the wacky decade.

Seven strangers escape from the grind of two-thousand-now into the 1990s and relive the pimpin’ pop culture, phat fads and stylin’ fashion of the eclectic decade that’s all that and a bag of chips. Join them as they grunge, swing, vogue, rave, do the Carlton through the hits of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, U2, Bjork, Britney, Tori, Hootie, Shania, Alanis, Mariah, Celine,Tupac, Garth, Faith, JLo, Ricky Martin, NSYNC, Boys II Men, Christina, Spice Girls, and many more while they rediscover their voice in a world longing to connect on the precipice of a new millennium. Pump Up the Volume! It’s so money!

Show Times are Thursdays at 7:30pm, Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 4pm and 8pm, and Sundays at 2pm. To purchase tickets, click here.

At Broadway San Diego, An American in Paris will be running from September 5-10th. An American in Paris is the new Tony Award-winning musical about an American soldier, a mysterious French girl, and an indomitable European city, each yearning for a new beginning in the aftermath of war.

Acclaimed director and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon brings the magic and romance of Paris into perfect harmony with unforgettable songs from George and Ira Gershwin in the show that earned more awards than any other musical in the 2015 season!

The New York Times raves, “An American in Paris is a triumph! Pure joy!” and the Wall Street Journal declares, “Once you’ve seen it, you’ll find it hard to settle for less ever again.” Don’t miss this stunning Broadway hit when it arrives in San Diego on its first national tour!

Also playing at Broadway San Diego, and fitting for a city by the sea: Disney’s The Little Mermaid. The show will be running from September 19-24th.

In a magical kingdom beneath the sea, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories, with music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, it’s a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. Come fall in love with the magic for the first time—or all over again with classics such as “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl, “Part of Your World” and more! Disney’s The Little Mermaid is produced by Pittsburgh CLO & Kansas City Starlight.
