Star Wars day at Comic-Con
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, there was a young journalist who took on the challenge of Star Wars Day at Comic-Con. Yes, you heard right. This Friday at Comic-Con was Star Wars day, and what an adventure it was.
The transformation from Comic-Con to Star wars Con, rivaled that of Han Solos infamous Kessel run in under twelve parsecs. Every corner of the Convention center had mystically transformed itself into the world George Lucas had bestowed upon us thirty-years ago. The sheer number of Star Wars costumes and paraphernalia had me questioning the reality I was in. I was so flabbergasted by the sheer amount of Jedi’s, and Storm Troopers around me I wanted my metachlorian count to be measured immediately.
Overwhelmed with childish glee,I immediately began to quote out loud to all Storm Troopers, ” These are not the droids you are looking for!” However, the reality of the surroundings I was in quickly hit me after a Bunny in a bikini grazed my camera bag. Soon after my encounter with the attractive quadruped I opened the events guide to plan out my course of action. The first panel I hit was the G4 “Attack of the show” panel, with Olivia Munn and Keven Peirera .
Scooting along on my speeder, I quickly entered the panel. Catching the tail end of the panel I was able to snag a few photos of the beautiful Olivia Munn, and the always awesome, Kevin Peirera. There ,they discussed what was new on their show, and Olivia’s role in the up and coming feature film of Iron Man 2. The G4 panel was fun and entertaining and had me excited about the future of G4. After getting my gamer fix, I quickly leaped over to the 24 panel to see what the cast of 24 was up too.
There they discussed the up and coming new season, and the new addition to this seasons cast. Freddie Prinze Jr., is set to star along side Kiefer Sutherland in this season of 24. Prinze is an ex-marine who will help Sutherland in his quest for saving the world from daily disaster. Prinze indulged on how he loved playing the character because he had ” all the qualities that he loved,” which made it easier to get into the character. The panel went on and the cast and creators further indulged the audience with information and insights on the workings of 24, and many other aspects that make it the show that it is, and will always be.
After 24 , I went to the new Sony Pictures Entertainment panel where the new Legion movie and District-9 were showcasing. Legion is a movie based on the epic battle of angels against mankind. With actors such as Paul Bittany, Adrianne Palicki, Doug Jones, Tyrese Gibson, and Scott Stewart Legion is looking to be a show stopper. Its religious base, coupled with great story telling, and talented acting, it is looking to be a must see for the up and coming movie releases. The cast and crew were very enthusiastic about the film, and were all notably passionate about what they had created. All in all the new Legion film looks promising and I for one will be watching it.
Now, onto District- 9. District-9 is produced by Peter Jackson, and written and directed by Nick Blomkamp. The movie centers in the region of South Africa, and is based on the a world that has taken on extraterrestrials as refugees. Young, budding actor Sharlto Copley, is the main character in the movie and is infected by the aliens DNA. He then begans to turn, and is used as a patsy to harness the technology that the refugee aliens have begun to make. You may be asking “why is he being used”?Well, acording to the creators, the weaponry that the aliens make are only usable if you posses alien DNA, and are ineffective otherwise. Copley then begins on a journey in fighting back against the “MNU” (much like our border patrol) and soon emerges himself in the alien refugee camps, becoming a target himself. The CGI and detail put into this movie looks astonishing, and you can see some remnants of the lost Halo movie that fell through due to bureaucratic reasons. The sneak peek was a thrilling spectacle to watch and had my blood pumping. With action packed adventure, and a mystifying plot line. District-9 looks like a definite must see for sci-fi fanantics everywhere.
Now, the best for last. Star Wars! Lucasfilm, and the Star Wars Spectacular unveiled what is in the future for the Star wars universe. They showcased a newly, highly-anticipated, concert. Featuring a symphony, live acting, and imagery. It looks to be an amazing new addition to the great Star Wars legend. Also in the panel Olivia Munn and Keven Pereira graced us with their presence once more.Highlighting some of Lucasfilm’s well guarded secrets Pereira and Munn took claim of the stage. Coming out dressed as “Doug” Skywalker, and Princess Leia, Pereira and Munn entered swinging their light sabers violently at one another. Approaching the podium with Jedi like fines, Munn looked breath taking, and Pereira rivaled that of an inbred Jedi.Discussing the legacy of Star Wars and how it has influenced so many lives around the world, Munn and Pereira took the show. Humorous, and eventful, the panel was an homage to the greatness that is Star Wars.
Closing out the day I begun to think to myself how Star Wars has become an American staple in all of our lives. Whether it be as youngsters, or even as adults its legacy rings through all of our lives. It touches every foundation of entertainment, and influences future Science Fiction writers in all corners of the globe.
George Lucas, we bow to you, and thank you for letting the force be with us.
