Where to Eat Vegan in San Diego

By  |

People are becoming more and more conscious of the food they eat these days. There has been a lot of awareness around how the food we eat affects the planet, other species, and our bodies. These realizations have led many to completely rethink their diets and the way they think about food. This awareness has led to improved health, and also a lot of great vegan and vegetarian restaurant options. But these restaurants aren’t just for those with vegan diets; the dishes use meat substitutes that are unexpected and even a carnivore wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. Here’s a list of our favorite vegan establishments in San Diego and the dishes that make them worth your while:

Plumeria

Plumeria Vegetarian Restaurant is in the heart of University Heights. This Thai restaurant believes in high-quality vegan and vegetarian food. All of their dishes are free of fish sauces and animal products (unless you opt for an egg in your dish, which is available with some meals). All dishes are prepared fresh daily, using the finest ingredients available. We use organic vegetables when available. Though the menu has duck, chicken, beef, and shrimp as protein options, these options are substituted vegan versions made from tofu. Try one of these options coated in Plumeria’s Tangerine sauce, served with steamed broccoli. Their Pad Thai (a classic Thai dish made with rice vermicelli, tangy tamarind sauce, fresh bean sprouts and crushed peanuts) is also a favorite.

Grains

San Diego’s new vegetarian restaurant, Grains Cafe, opened in North Park in the space formerly occupied by Adams Avenue Grill. Grains opened in April with a menu that is very vegan-friendly with items clearly marked. The menu frequently changes, but is centered around homemade pastas (including gluten-free quinoa) and Asian-style offerings. Expect options like Buffalo cauliflower, salt & pepper calamari mushrooms, vegan Philly cheesesteak, Thai yellow curry quinoa pasta, drunken angel hair noodles, and vegan tom kah soup.

Loving Hut is currently the fastest growing International vegan fast food chain in the world, and they have 2 locations in San Diego. Loving Hut was created with a vision that all beings could live in peace, love and harmony with each other and the planet.
