Lorde’s Performance on SNL: New Sounds, Songs, and Upcoming Album

By  |

Lorde performed on Saturday Night Live as the musical guest, hosted by Scarlett Johansson on March 12th, 2017, and her performances were magical. In 2015, she sang on SNL with Disclosure, but this performance released her own solo material and demonstrated her vocal capability. Though she is known for “Royals,” the diverse songs she performed on SNL, ‘Green Light’ and ‘Liability,’ ensured a bright future for Lorde and excited us for her new album.

The first song she performed on SNL titled, ‘Green Light,’ was both uplifting and had a catchy beat. As joyful piano keys and background singers danced in the background, Lorde passionately moved to the rhythm with out-of-body hand gestures in convergence with her powerful vocals. Her spirit vividly brightened the room as she sang this new electro-pop dance song that focuses on motivation to let go from unimportant things.

Lorde’s second performance of the song titled, ‘Liability,’ was completely opposite of the first, considering its heartbreaking tone. She was seated for the entirety of the song unlike her first performance where she was jumping up and down and dancing. Lorde wore a white dress, a veil that concealed her face, and resembled an angel with lights beaming on her. Jack Antonoff, her co-songwriting partner, gently played the piano and revealed their effortless musical partnership. Though this song does sound like a heartbreaking ballad, the lyrics show it is actually about self love. Her last line, “You’re going to watch me disappear into the sun” delineates her contentment with her actions and individual self. She doesn’t need anyone else besides herself to be content.

With two completely different sounding songs and performances, the anticipation for Lorde’s new album is at an all time high. Thankfully, her rightfully titled album, ‘Melodrama,’ releases on June 16. After these euphoric performances, we marked our calendar and will be anxiously waiting for surprising sounds, tones and uplifting lyrics from Lorde.
