Coming to Netflix in June

By  |

As if it wasn’t already exciting enough that June has arrived and summer is unofficially here (the first day of summer is June 20, to be precise), there are tons of great titles that will be released on Netflix this coming month. Summer is a great time to explore San Diego and the great outdoors, but sometimes you just need a break from the heat, and there’s no better way to relax than to stream a good movie or binge watch a series in the comfort of your own home. June will be chock-full of throw-back movies, anticipated new seasons of popular shows, and Netflix original films. Here’s a few titles that will be released this month:

The Sixth Sense

Release Date: June 1st

The Sixth Sense is M. Night Shyamalan’s biggest blockbuster. Originally released in 1999, this supernatural horror-thriller film introduced us to the plot twists that Shyamalan is known for. Actor Haley Joel Osment was catapulted into fame with his chilling portrayal of Cole, a young child who sees ghosts amongst the living. Bruce Willis plays a child psychologist who takes on Cole’s case. If you’ve never seen The Sixth Sense, a lazy day during the height of June gloom would be a good time to watch this horror classic.

Orange is the New Black: Season 5

Release Date: June 9th

Since its first season on Netflix, Orange is the New Black has had a cult following. This show was one of Netflix’ first self-commissioned original series, and it has done very well. OITNB has become Netflix’s most-watched original series. The show has received critical acclaim and in its first season, the series garnered 12 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. The new season is available on June 9, so there’s still time to catch up if you aren’t up to speed.

Counterpunch

Release Date: June 16th

Counterpunch is a new Netflix Original documentary that explores the world of boxing and features young boxers who are determined to make a name for themselves alongside the sport’s most remembered and revered champions. Director Jay Bulger (who happens to be an amateur boxer as well) expresses, “Many years after hanging up the gloves, I set out to capture the state of boxing in America, following three boxers, in three different chapters of a boxing career. When combined, I hope they provide a complete picture of the sport today.” Counterpunch will be available on June 16.

Moana

Release Date: June 20th

Disney’s Moana was released in 2016 and is entertaining for kids and adults alike. In this animated story, young Moana sets off on an epic journey to save her village. She meets the demigod Maui (voiced by Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson) and they continue their journey, forging a great friendship during their trip across the ocean. The music is top notch, and includes a song by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Lauren lives in OB with her French bulldog, Elvis Presley. She loves laughter and the great outdoors. You can contact her at [email protected].
