What to Expect During the 2019 Wildflower Season

By  |

This spring in California is shaping up to be a spectacular time for wildflower blooms. Usually a rather rare and unpredictable experience, wildflower blooms can attract thousands of peoples to the outdoors to witness such a stunning beauty.

Wildflower blooms can happen in many areas, but they are typically most striking in desert climates. They typically occur when an area gets a high level of precipitation after a years-long drought that results in the elimination of grasses and weeds that suck up nutrients in the ground. All of these conditions make for optimal conditions for wildflower blooms.

If you want to go out and experience these incredibly captivating blooms, many California State Parks are the areas you’ll want to head to. While it is hard to predict where these blooms will happen, in 2017 they were sighted at Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and Ocotillo Wells. However, before going out to explore, here are some things you should know and expect.

Respect the Landscape

One of the most important things to remember is that respect should always be shown to the natural aspects of the park. This means when viewing the blooms, keep off the flowers and refrain from picking them. A picture will last you much longer than a flower picked from the ground. If there are trails on the park, be sure to adhere to them – they’re there for a reason.

Understand the Area

Believe it or not, State Parks do not have WiFi, so be prepared for spotty or non-existent cell coverage in some areas of the parks. Before heading out, remember to download a map of the park so you can have some bearing as to where you are. If you’re taking your vehicle out there, be mindful of the terrain and research if four-wheel drive is required. If you want to stop to view the wildflowers or wildlife, always pull off to the side of the road keeping the roads clear.

Check the Weather

Be prepared for any weather conditions when heading out. Make sure your clothing and equipment is adequate for the anticipated weather.

Listen to Your Body

Bring plenty of food and water for your hike, as they’re will be often be no gas stations or restaurants within the area. Remember to drink plenty of water so you stay hydrated, especially when you’re out during a warmer day.

The wildflower season is upon us so don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to witness such captivating beauty in nature. If you abide by these suggestions, you’re sure to have a wonderful time.
