Memorial Day weekend 2014 in San Diego

By  |

Memorial Day in San Diego, another day in paradise. So much to do, so many wonderful places to go. Here’s a short list of ideas to have fun on this special weekend. mem1

Take a walk along the beach. Try parking around the Crystal Pier (Mission Boulevard and Grand), then walk to Belmont Park. Ride the roller coaster, have some lunch, then walk back on the boardwalk, or the beach, or the water.

Visit La Jolla Cove. For natural beauty, the wonder of the seals, and man-made landmarks, La Jolla is a prime destination. Visit the cove, then walk leisurely down Prospect and find a fine eatery to round out the day.

Stroll around Balboa Park. So many paths, so much to see and do in Balboa Park. There’s bike-riding, picnicking, visiting the museums, watching the people.

Explore the harbor. Embark on an adventure from the Embarcadero. Harbor Excursions and whale watching take you to a whole other side of San Diego. Viewing the city from the harbor is a sight every native and every visitor should not miss.mem4

Remember the Midway. A fitting activity for Memorial Day or any time. Come aboard the Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum. The ship spent 50 years as an important part of the U.S. Navy fleet, particularly during World War II. The Midway has become an accurate record of the living conditions and technical makeup of  a Second World War aircraft carrier.

Visit the Point Loma Lighthouse. Another appropriate destination is to drive through Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery out to the Lighthouse.

mem7Pub-crawl through the Gaslamp. Have a memorable night on the town. The Gaslamp District offers pub after pub after club to walk to, and then take a taxi home.

Ride the Trolley. Seems like a simple enough thing. The Trolley is a convenient way to get from one place to another, but its also a destination in itself. Spend an afternoon during Memorial Day weekend seeing the beautiful sights of San Diego, from Hazard Center to Petco Park to San Diego State, from the vantage point of a trolley car.mem8
