FilmOut San Diego film festival 2014

Announcing 3 parties and 25 films with LGBT aspects over 3 days at the North Park Birch Theatre. The theater is at 2891 University Avenue, San Diego, 92104. Tickets are $10 to $25 per show, and tickets for the opening night movie, “Boy Meets Girl” include admission to the opening night party.

Here’s a rundown of some of the films:

Boy Meets Girl (2014, USA, 95 minutes, Director: Eric Schaeffer): A modern comedy concerning being gay and trans in Kentucky. Michael Welch from the “Twilight” movies is Robby, Michelle Hendley plays Ricky, his best friend and a beautiful trans person. Francesca, played by Alexandra Turshen, arrives in town to complicate and stimulate both their lives.

Beyond The Mirror’s Gaze (2013, Canada, 4 minutes, animated, Director: Iris Moore): A mind-blowing, gender-bending cartoon involving the swapping of sexual roles and equipment.

Playing It Straight (2013, USA, 20 minutes, Director: Michael Kenney): A farce that starts in the aftermath of a bachelor party. Everything that can go askew does on one man’s journey to his wedding and marriage.

Lilting (2014, United Kingdom,91 minutes, Director: Hong Khaou): In this official selection of the Sundance, Berlin and London film festivals, the sad tale is told of a Chinese Cambodian mother, played by Pei-pei Cheng, who is in mourning over her son’s dying. Her son was a gay man still in the closet. His partner, portrayed by Ben Whishaw, whom she thought was a platonic friend, comes to visit. With neither speaking the other’s language (on several levels) they manage to communicate and remember the love they feel for the one who has passed.
