2017’s Oscar Noms are here!

We’re still a month away from the 89th Academy Awards, but Oscar buzz has finally made its decisions.

Standouts include La La Land, which stole the show and set a record for most wins at the Golden Globes. For this year’s Oscars, the film’s nominations top out at 14, tying the number for most nominations for an Academy Award.

Meryl Streep, who starred in Florence Foster Jenkins this past year, received her 20th nomination, the most ever by any one person. Certainly, Streep is perfectly rated.

Last year, the Academy drew quite a lot of backlash, with a whitewashed group of nominees. This sparked the trend #OscarsSoWhite, and resulted in numerous artists boycotting the event. This is not the case this time around. This batch of nominees is the most diverse yet, especially in the supporting actress category, where black women are the majority. Viola Davis is the first black woman to receive three Oscar nominations.

Of course there are some misses, including no women nominated for best director, which has only been won by a woman once. And, Asians only represent one percent of the nominees this year.
