Girl Boss Premieres on Netflix
Although today is the series premiere of ‘Girl Boss,’ and you might have been waiting anxiously for it, I’m afraid to tell you that it might not be as great as you thought it would be. Considering it is inspired by Sophia Amoruso’s best-selling book, this series follows the rise of her multi-million dollar fashion empire, Nasty Gal. However, the show portrays Sophia (and the rest of millennials) as more of a narcissist, rather than a “Girl Boss.”
Sophia, an anarchist individualist, discovers a passion for vintage fashion, becoming an unlikely businesswoman in the process. As her business grows, however, she has to learn how to cope amidst the pressure and tribulations that come with the position. Even though the plot is promising, the show is not definitive of an empowering “Girl Boss” because Sophia comes off as a spoiled teen seeking attention and unappreciative of the wealth she was born into.
On the other hand, the cast might just be a reason alone to watch the series. Sassy and confident actress best known for her role in Tomorrowland, Britt Robertson, plays star Sophia. Also; Johnny Simmons, who is known for his roles in Evan Almighty, Jennifer’s Body, and Perks of Being a Wall Flower plays Shane. Furthermore, the unforgettable Dean Norris from Breaking Bad and Little Miss Sunshine plays Jay.
Even though the cast is outstanding, I don’t think it can save “Girl Boss.” The trials Sophia went through with Nasty Gal are riveting and it seems like the premise would make for a binge-worthy Netflix series, but the plot simply does not do her and the book justice. However, it doesn’t exemplify Sophia’s road to success effectively and distastefully generalizes all millennials as unappreciative brats who only care about money.
Nonetheless, you can now watch, ‘Girl Boss,’ on Netflix and there are 13 30-minute episodes. Even though we weren’t the series’ biggest fan, you might want to give it a shot!
