San Diego’s Most Cinematic Movie Theaters
With Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” releasing in theaters around the globe and Marvel ramping up for Comic-Con, now’s the time to head to a local San Diego movie theater to catch the blockbusters of the summer! Fortunately, San Diego has a surfeit of theaters in which to catch the latest release. Most theaters for the next few weeks will tend to be showing “the Odyssey,” “Toy Story 5,” and Illumination’s “Minions and Monsters.” Tom Holland’s latest, “Spider-man: Brand New Day” also releases soon, coming to theaters on July 30th. Overall, the remainder of the summer is set to be an excellent one for movies – so head down to one of the following theaters to appreciate them on the big screen!
- Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas Del Mar
As it says in the name, this movie theater offers more of a luxury experience for viewing the summer’s latest releases. It includes in-theater dining options, a full bar, and comfortable leather seats. It is located in Del Mar, so it may be a bit of a drive for anyone living downtown, but the luxury of this experience is entirely worth it.
- The Lot
If you’re looking for a nicer theater experience closer to home, the Lot is the way to go. With locations in Liberty Station and La Jolla, it’s not often that you’ll be unable to find openings at a showing of the film you want to see at either option. The Lot also comes with an in-theater dining option, as well as a bar, at both locations. The theaters themselves are comfortable, spacious, and boast large screens, making them perfect for any film of one’s choosing.
- AMC Mission Valley
Sometimes, you can’t go wrong with a classic. The Mission Valley AMC shows all of the most popular current releases and offers a classic modern movie theater experience (and happens to be more affordable than some of the aforementioned luxury experiences). It also carries one of the few IMAX screens in San Diego – an essential for viewing “The Odyssey,” which was shot entirely for IMAX. This AMC is well-equipped to provide a fabulous theater experience, with popcorn and snacks galore.
- Rooftop Cinema Club
While it’s not showing the latest releases like the previous theaters on this list, any compilation of San Diego cinemas would be incomplete without this entry. Found on a rooftop in Little Italy, this one-of-a-kind movie experience offers local brews and delicious snacks for an audience in an airy location. Bring a jacket, just in case it gets cold during the showing! The weather is, of course, worth it. The Rooftop Cinema is currently showing a number of old favorites mixed with some newer releases, such as “Obsession.”
- Cinema Under the Stars
Again, though it doesn’t tend to show new releases, any true San Diegan cinephile must make the journey to the Cinema Under the Stars at least once. This little location in Mission Hills is meant for true fans of the classics. Though it doesn’t look like much from outside, it’s an unforgettable experience to attend, and while the venue itself is small, the comfortable seating, excellent screen, and snack selection make this feel better than many larger movie theaters. Grab your tickets early! These showings can fill up on certain nights.
