San Diego’s Best Coffee Places

Whether for waking up in the morning or staying up at night, San Diego’s coffee places are home to a variety of eye-opening brews.

In the fast-paced modern world, a reliable source of caffeine is one of the best resources anyone can have. San Diego, fortunately, has plenty of excellent coffee places, though certain ones rise to the top. Between themselves, the best coffee places in the city cover the many shapes and sizes of coffee that anyone could prefer – so if you’re searching for a way to keep heavy eyelids open, consider visiting one of the following spots.

1. OB Coffee Roasters

Situated in the heart of OB on Newport Avenue, this little place roasts all of their coffee in-house (fitting, given their name) and is dog-friendly! OB Coffee Roasters really embodies the sense of community that binds together Ob so tightly, and serves as an excellent spot for a cozy morning cup of joe. It’s often full of people with laptops, so if you’re looking to get some work done grab a seat early! Still, the early wake-up will be worth it for their delicious coffee and friendly atmosphere.

2. The Forum Coffee House

Located in Clairemont Mesa, the Forum is a favorite of UCSSD students (with good reason). Like OB Coffee Roasters, seating is at a premium here, thanks to the diligent UCSD students who frequent this establishment. If you’re going over during the summer, however, you may have more space available to you! Their “Troubleshooter” (a kind of salted caramel latte) comes highly recommended. They also offer an excellent selection of pastries. As their motto goes: life happens, coffee helps.

3. Communal Coffee

A more modern coffee shop than the others on this list, Communal (located in North Park) is all about coffee and all about flowers. Inside this charming pink and white place is a boutique which sells artisan crafts and, of course, flowers. Their coffee is fabulous, too! With seating options ranging from a patio to cozy couches, one is always able to find something suited to their tastes. 

4. James Coffee Co.

Found on Downtown India St., this coffee place is one-of-a-kind. James Coffee is dog-friendly, fortunately, so don’t be afraid to bring your pup along to have a cup with you in the morning. This little cafe operates out of a converted warehouse location, so it has a more industrial feeling than many of the options on this list – but that makes it the perfect place to come if you want to feel industrious and productive! They’re known for their honey cinnamon latte, as well as their condensed milk lattes.

5. Bird Rock Coffee Roasters

With eleven locations throughout San Diego, Bird Rock is almost ubiquitous throughout America’s Brightest City. That variety of locations allows one to choose exactly what they’re looking for – the La Jolla location is better for a working environment, whereas the Pacific Beach location is frequented by surfers and a great place to have a chat. Their Macadamia Nut Latte is particularly well-made, as are their lattes in general. Any Bird rock location is sure to be a fun one that boasts excellent coffee.
