Spidey fans let the marvel madness countdown begin!  A release date has finally been set for May 5, 2011 even though filming will not start till the beginning of next year.

The Spider-man series has grossed over $2,496,346,518 worldwide with their three recent films. Each film has set several box office records, including all three in the top 20 highest-grossing domestic films.

In September of last year, director Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire made deals to direct and star in the fourth and fifth films, but were told to keep their budget down (although Maguire is making over $50 million for the next two films). Not surprisingly, actress Kirsten Dunst is also on board for the next two films.

On June 22, 2009, it was announced that Michael Papajohn would star as Dennis Carradine (The burglar who killed Parker’s grandfather), despite the character’s supposed death.  An “insider” claims that the two villains for Spidey 4 will be Carnage and the Lizard (played by Dylan Baker).

Carnage will be formed by a piece that Doctor Connor’s got to examine in Spidey 3.  During the same time of the experiment with revival of Connor’s arm, the birth of Lizard transpires. Connor’s officially becomes the Lizard after injecting himself with reptilian DNA in an attempt to re-grow his missing arm.  It is also rumored that Black Cat will be introduced in Spidey 4.  I guess you can never have too many villains for Spiderman to defeat.

On August 16, 2009, Sony announced that they have hired James Vanderbilt to write Spider-Man 5 and 6. These two films will both have connecting plots, although there has not been any mention to what they are about.  Oh and for all those Spidey fans that can’t get enough, Spider-man 4 is planned to be shown in IMAX!
