Noose found at Geisel Library

On Thursday February 25, 2010, a noose was found hanging from a bookshelf on the seventh floor of the UCSD Geisel library. This tragedy the third controversial incident in the past two weeks condemned by UCSD faculty and staff.

The first controversy being the “Compton Cookout” party and the second its subsequent Koala broadcast that used highly offensive language and called those who were outraged by the party “ungrateful.” A student called into the police department this morning at 9am to confess putting up the noose,  according to the school’s vice chancellor.

These events have caused a major uproar on the university’s campus, and action has been taken by authorities. Minority students were quick to act upon these occurrences, and they a declared “state of emergency” on February 19 as they met with campus administrators.

Today, February 26, a rally was held as a response to the noose incident. The predominant theme of the rally being that it is not okay to hang a noose in a public university’s library in 2010 or any other time.  Many students and professors from many ethnicities/backgrounds spoke (white, Latino, from UCLA, black professors, Latino professors, high school students/teachers) all united by this horrendous action.

It is clear that racial tensions at UCSD are not just about the Compton Cookout anymore. These events are evidence of an entrenched system where words and actions have been decontextualized and where people feel like it’s part of their freedom of speech to hang a noose in a public library.

Members of UCSD’s Black Student Union issued 4 pages of demands, one of which includes building a safe haven for black students to go when feeling threatened or intimidated. Faculty responded by holding a teach-in on Wednesday, and 300 outraged students came together for a rally in the Price Center. Some read poetry and others spoke to their peers about the importance of racial unity and harmony.

Many students feel threatened because of all the racial tension on campus, and several students have raised their voices about how these issues are not to be taken lightly. Black students make up less than 2% of the university’s population.

The UCSD Principles of Community reads:

“We value the cultural diversity of UCSD because it enriches our lives and the university. We celebrate this diversity and support respect for all cultures, by both individuals and the university as a whole. We are a university that adapts responsibly to cultural differences among the faculty, staff, students, and community.”

Instead of an apology there has been steady escalation and now the noose. So, what exactly will the excuses be for this cowardly act that brings up memories of the confederate KKK of the South in their attempts to keep slavery and the non-whites in fear? Is it that are uneducated, is it that their parents planted these seeds of hate, is it that they are live in fear because our President in the white house is not 100% white. This is what the republican party of “birthers, baggers and blowhards” have brought you. These kids follow what their dullard leaders say, they are young and dumb. Are you surprise at what they do when you know what they think? Of course it could be an off-campus dullard who listens to Beck, Hedgecock, Hannity, O’Reilly, Rush and Savage and the rest of the Blowhards.

    @ Will

Republicans have done their best to own this particular kind of racism. If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, and has its power base built on fear of minorities, then its probably a Republican duck.

Modern liberalism and the fear of talking about issues like these is what causes ignorant displays like these. Blaming the republican party and certain news personalities certainly shows your ability to be open minded

That noose is not ‘hanging’ in traditional fashion. it’s merely perched against a shelf.

and it’s Green, of all colors…not beige or cream.

I am just like the rest of you that like to speak their minds. I guess I hit a nerve and others want to go on a power trip and control the message. Keep writing what you believe and don’t let other silence you.

Was Not Was: The above picture seems to contradict your statements but thats OK, you are use to making excuses.

Turns out the noose was ‘hung’ by a ‘minority’ student — race/ethnicity unspecified. That kind of screws up the whole ‘white, racist’ thing don’t it.

Ahhh…once again the wishes of liberals are dashed. For this is not the act of a white person or a republican but a black student, pretty much like every other claim of this kind. Anytime there is a noose found or the word “nigger” is spray painted on some wall it will be a black person’s doing 9 times out of 10.

Don’t forget liberals… the Democrat party started the KKK, Republicans freed the slaves and MLK Jr. was a republican. I know that is all painful to accept for your simple minds but you can just take baby steps. Maybe some day you will let go of your inner racism and stop injecting race into every issue.

I fully understand why you inject race into every issue though. You can’t win on facts or ideas so you just always throw in some name calling to try and kill the debate.

I sounds to me that until we see her in person that we will continue to confirm and deny what she real is. Just saying.
