Glee Confirms Britney Spears Episode

I’m a Gleek 4 U — The second season of Fox hit series Glee doesn’t premiere until September 21st, but anticipation is already building as more details of guest stars and cover songs are slowly revealed.

The first season was full of celebrity appearances, such as Josh Groban, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Kristin Chenoweth, and Neil Patrick Harris, just to name a few. So of course the second season is sure to welcome many more entertainers to the Gleek family. Youtube sensation Charice Pempengco joins the cast as a foreign exchange student competing against Rachel Berry, while American entertainment legend Carol Burnett is set to play Sue Sylvester’s mother. Additional cameos include Paul McCartney and Britain’s Got Talent‘s Susan Boyle.

While Gleeks everywhere are sure to be excited with news of some of entertainment’s finest gracing the small screen, the much of the buzz generated involves notorious teen idol Britney Spears. Talks of an episode dedicated to the “Baby One More Time” artist have been flooded the forums especially with Glee’s tributes to icons Lady Gaga and the Queen of Pop Madonna last season.

Series writer/creator Ryan Murphy confirmed the Spears-themed episode with Entertainment Tonight last month, but there is no confirmation as to whether the Pop Princess herself will make a guest appearance. Don’t worry Glee fans, the spotlight on another blonde of the same moniker will surely make the episode amazing. Heather Morris, the very talented actress/dancer from Arizona who plays Brittany on the show, is said to be a major player in the Spears’ episode. Although the airheaded member of both the Cheerios (cheerleaders) and New Directions (glee club) was only a recurring character in the first season of Glee, she returns as an official series regular, garnering solos and additional lines.

Disappointed that there might not be any Britney-on-Brittany action? Don’t be. Even without Spears in the flesh, the Britney episode of Glee is something you will want to keep on your “Radar.” Murphy revealed some details at a press conference at San Diego’s Comic Con 2010, “All I can say is that we’re doing six Britney songs…I sort of don’t want to say what we’re doing yet because it’s not airing until September, but we’re paying tribute to her in a fun and unexpected way.”

The episode will be sure to give Spears’ career a much needed boost, hopefully reminding audiences of her “Stronger” days, putting her more “Toxic” days of head shaving and underwear forgetting in the past. My horrible Britney song title puns aside, the ability of Glee to reinvigorate the American audience’s interest in Spears career is definitely possible. They currently have three hit soundtrack albums out reintroducing or familiarizing fans with their renditions of a variety of songs ranging from rock classics “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen and “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey to “Defying Gravity” from the Broadway musical Wicked.

Even their music videos, such as their re-imaginations of Olivia Newton John’s “Physical” and Madonna’s “Vogue,” have garnered mass popularity. So it wouldn’t be completely out of the ordinary to expect Kurt Hummel in a diamond encrusted body suit or Sue Sylvester in a green bra taming a snake gracing televisions and computer screens everywhere very soon.

Glee comes back for a second season on September 21st, 2010. Get your red latex cat suits out because the Britney Spears themed episode is scheduled to air September 28th, 2010.
