This Weekend in San Diego: Thanksgiving, Christmas, musicals and more

The holidays are upon us with a vengeance.

And that means that it’s time to stir up your adventurous persona to experience what San Diego has in store for the holidays for both family and adults.

Here are some of the biggest Thanksgiving and Christmas events happening this weekend -at affordable costs- throughout San Diego county.

Surfin’ Santa Celebration

Where: Seaport Village 849 W. Harbor Drive

When: Nov. 26 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Cost: Free

What: There are the early Christmas celebrants and those that don’t celebrate at all. Either way, Santa will be arriving in style via watercraft for those who want to experience him in all of his glory at Seaport Village this weekend. He’ll be residing on a large surfboard to pose with attendees for photos. But that’s not all. Crafts, live street performances and a festival parade will be in store as well. This marks the eleventh annual Surfin’ Santa Celebration.

New Musical Miss You Like Hell

Where: La Jolla Playhouse 2910 La Jolla Village Dr.

When: Nov. 26 at 2:00 p.m.

Cost: $20-$80

What: This recent collaboration created by the accomplished playwright Quiara Alegria Hudes -Pulitzer Prize winner- follows a road trip between a mother and daughter as they meet a cast that deeply influences their relationship. The cast features professionals who have worked both on Broadway and in San Diego. You can find additional information about the play and more on their website.

Thanksgiving Puppet Show in Balboa Park

Where: Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater 2130 Pan American Rd.

When: Nov. 27 at 11:00 a.m.

Cost: $5

What: What is worse than someone who tries to spoil the holidays for everyone? Answer: nothing. That’s why it’s important to come to Marie Hitchcock’s Puppet Theater to show your support in an attempt to thwart Wanda the Witch’s evils plans to ruin Christmas. So make sure to bring your friends and family for this exciting and jubilant event.

Julian Country Christmas and Tree Lighting

Where: Pioneer Park 2811 Washington St.

When: Nov 26 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Cost: Free

What: It may difficult for many to enjoy the sounds of nature, the smell of pine in the air, and the ash from a  roasting fire than in the Cuyamaca Mountains. If you’re looking to get away from all of the bustling crowds and jarring sounds of downtown San Diego, then you may want to try out this cozy getaway. You can partake in the many holiday events happening in Julian from surveying the Living Nativity scene staged on Main Street to listening to Handel’s Messiah courtesy of the Julian Community Choir. Skating by the Sea

Where: Hotel del Coronado 1500 Orange Ave

When: Thanksgiving Day to Jan 2, 2017, 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. (skating times vary)

Cost: $25

What: Let’s face it, there simply aren’t many places where you can ice skate alongside the beach. With a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean and Coronado Beach, this event will include hot chocolate and other refreshments for skaters. And if you’re having trouble locating your skates, then you can be rest assured that there will be rentals to be offered to participants as well.
