With the Academy Awards looming right around the corner—this upcoming Sunday February 27th to be exact, there is major buzz for what Oscar fashions we’ll see this year. The public is eager to see which Oscar trends will hit or miss. Nominated red carpet veterans such as Nicole Kidman, Natalie Portman, James Franco, Michelle Williams, and Christian Bale will definitely be under the spotlight to see if they will keep up to the high standard of dress that the Academy Awards is known for. There is plenty anticipation for Oscar new comers as well, what looks will young stars such as Hailee Steinfeld and Jennifer Lawrence wear on the red carpet?

The Oscar fashion frenzy is in full tow with various fashion predictions, best and worst dressed celebs, and style links about what celebs will be wearing to the ceremony. Fashion experts are also looking to the runway to see what likely fashions will be worn. Teen Vogue fashion market editor Mary Kate Steinmiller told USA Today’s Andrea Mandell that we’ll likely be seeing red this year. Steinmiller said, “there was so much red on the fall runways (in New York) that hopefully that will infiltrate into Oscar dresses this year.

The introduction of the Oscar Design Challenge brings further spotlight to the media importance of Oscar fashion. The Oscar Design Challenge is a competition that designers submitted red carpet dress design sketches to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a jury selected winners to compete in a runway presentation to the media. The winner of the challenge will have his or her dress worn by the woman who hands out the Oscars at the awards show. The Challenge also opened voting to the public on the Oscar website, from February 15th-21st. Although the polls are now closed, further coverage about the competition and its winner and their winning design will be shown on ABC’s “Red Carpet Live,” which airs at 4 pm P.T. on February 27th. Such an opportunity is providing global media recognition for the lucky winning designer and displays how much influence one night at the Oscars can really have!
