The Tiny House Movement

By  |

The tiny house movement is taking the world by storm, with people choosing to downsize from larger homes to a more manageable space in order to live a minimalistic lifestyle. However, the tiny house movement is about more than just living in a smaller space. The typical American home is about 2,600 square feet, whereas a tiny home shrinks that total living space to anywhere from 100 to 400 square feet.

Sound pretty cramped? Well, according to people living in these tiny homes, it’s absolutely perfect. In a rapidly changing world with a variety of economic and environmental forces, people are turning to tiny homes to live a more manageable and carefree lifestyle. Not only does it descale your overall space, tiny homes are typically conducive to living more sustainably, with most of them affixed with solar panels and other environmentally friendly features. So what’s it like living in a tiny home? It’s definitely a lifestyle change, that’s for sure. However, it isn’t without its benefits.

Forces You Outside

With less stuff in your home to keep you entertained, people who live in tiny homes say that they spend a lot of time outdoors. Here in San Diego, that is not a bad thing at all. Between the gorgeous beaches, bustling nightlife, and a thriving restaurant and beer scene, there is so much to explore in this awesome city. Tiny homes make the idea of downsizing and saving money on adventures not too shabby.

Minimalistic Lifestyle

Living in a tiny home certainly forces you to become more conscious of your belongings, making you more deliberate about what you need and what to get rid of. With fewer belongings, you have less stuff to keep track of, which can lead to a less stressful lifestyle. As long as you stay organized and make use of your space, a tiny home can be very comfortable.

Less Time Cleaning

With a smaller space, you will find yourself spending less time cleaning and maintaining your home. This means more time for other activities. Say goodbye to Sunday chore day. Time spent doing laundry, dishes, and overall cleaning of your space will be cut considerably.

Cheaper Living

Along with a more manageable living space, people who live in tiny homes enjoy much lower monthly bills. It doesn’t take much electricity to power a home under 400 square feet, or much water for just one shower. Tiny-homeowners also use much smaller appliances, which use up substantially less energy.

No Room for Guests

Nonetheless, there are some drawbacks to living in a tiny home. If you’re not the type to be on it with your organization skills, then a small place like this isn’t the move. Tiny homes force you to have an exceptional organizational mindset because if you don’t, a tiny home will pretty much resemble a cluttered closet, which can be very uncomfortable. Entertaining guests can also be an issue in a tiny home, with an obvious lack of space not being too inviting for guests.

Tiny homes are perfectly legal in San Diego, as long as you meet a set of regulatory requirements. Tiny home listings here range from $30,000 to $50,000 for anywhere between 200 – 400 square feet. However, nothing is stopping you from building your own! In the end, even if a tiny home isn’t right for you, you have to admit, they are undeniably fascinating and charming to look at.

    Hi!

Thanks for your story, glad to see the Tiny Home movement made it to your magazine here in SD. Please let me know if you plan to do any more stories on the homes themselves and or the movement – we just launched the first local chapter of the American Tiny House Association here in SD so there’s more to come.

In the meantime, thanks for your article!
