Simon Cowell proposes sing-off between X Factor, The Voice, and American Idol

What started back in 2002 as your average singing competition quickly exploded into a nation-wide sensation. Ten years and 11 seasons later, American Idol is still going strong in the realm of reality television, but it is not without its competitors.  The X Factor (which features former Idol judge Simon Cowell) and The Voice are giving American Idol a run for its money.

In light of these rivalries, Simon Cowell suggested via Twitter a sing-off between the winners of this season’s X Factor, American Idol, and The Voice.

He tweeted: “Maybe the winner of @TheXFactorUSA this yr should compete with winner of The Voice & Idol in a super final. Just a thought. I’d be up for it.”

The X Factor premiered on Fox last fall and though it did not perform as well as Cowell had hoped, it has been renewed for a second season later this year.  However, season one judges/mentors Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, along with host Steve Jones, will not be in the show.  There has been much speculation over who will replace the two judges, but the only star that Cowell did admit he was considering was the late Whitney Houston.  Cowell told CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight that he had scheduled a meeting on Monday to discuss the possibility of Houston joining the judge’s panel.
“We were ironically going to meet on Monday and, of course, one of the names we were going to be talking about in that meeting as a possible mentor on the new series of ‘X Factor’ was going to be Whitney Houston,” said Cowell.  The pop superstar recognized as one of her generation’s greatest R & B voices died on February 11 at the age of 48.

With the popularity of all three shows combined, it’s obvious that many fans would share this sentiment.  A mega-showdown between the best of the best of the best would definitely mix things up.  One judge however takes issue with Cowell’s proposition.  American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe replied to the tweet:

“@simoncowell suggests the IDOL winner should take on the voice and x-factor winners. The problem is the Idol winner will be a star by then.”

With the ongoing rivalry between Simon and Nigel, it’s no surprise that emotions are stirred.  Still, a showdown between the winners of X Factor, Idol, and Voice sounds like a promising mash-up.
