Chargers training camp began yesterday, but San Diego football fans will have to wait a little longer to get a glimpse of their 2009 Chargers take the field at Chargers Park this preseason.

San Diego fans accustomed to watching their team from the sideline during summer practices are forced to stay home this year due to ongoing repairs to underground storm drains at the Kearny Mesa facility. Three public practices are scheduled to be held on August 5, 8, and 12 at Qualcomm Stadium. Admission will be free.

After going 8-8 last season, Chargers fans are eager to see the return of star linebacker Shawne Merriman and evaluate for themselves his health status after missing all but one game due to a knee injury. The Chargers clearly suffered late in the season from Merriman’s absence and desperately needed the intensity that he brings to the team. Charger fans are also eager to get a glimpse of first round pick Larry English out of Northern Illinois University. English and the Chargers have not yet come to a contract agreement although it is likely that he will be signed by the public practice dates in August.

The Chargers will be participating in their first exhibition game three days after the last public practice on August 15th against the Seattle Seahawks. Although the exhibition will likely be a light contact game, it is sure to wet the appetite of San Diego football fans eagerly awaiting the start of the regular season.
