Managing your retirement, advice from Steve Sexton

By  |

steve sexton“Winning In Life” radio show airs every Sunday morning at 9:00 on KBCQ 1170 AM. The show is hosted by the Entertainer’s very own financial expert, Steve Sexton. Steve is President of Sexton Advisory Group and Director of the Financial Knowledge Institute. Not only does he provide his listeners with the best advice in financial planning, but he also introduces guest speakers from time to time to talk about other popular life topics such as health, charity, traveling, and much more.

In this week’s episode, Steve starts off by telling us about one of his listeners, Mark, who has been an investor for many years. Mark worked as an attorney and knows everything there is to know about managing a lawsuit with his 20 years experience, but still he doesn’t know how to manage his own retirement. Steve calls retirement looking at a “different animal” because many people, like Mark, have been trained in their job fields for 20-30 years and know the ins and outs of them. However, when it comes to retiring, people aren’t trained to know what questions to ask and don’t know how to filter out the misconceptions.

Steve shares a story about being in a similar situation as a colon cancer patient. He was on the board of a company and three months into chemotherapy, he finds out his company hadn’t paid their health insurance costs. Steve was billed $180,000 and started looking into all the costs and figures out his company only had to pay $30,000 for insurance. When he talked to his accountant about the situation, he realized that his CPA had only been looking into the past and not issues that could arise in the future.

Later in the show, Steve talks about all the different costs of retirement that many people overlook and how times have changed drastically since FDR first set up social security which was meant to be tax free. He goes more in depth about taxes, IRAs, fees on investment portfolios, losing pensions when a spouse passes away, and other costs to be aware of.
