Brains and brawn collide this first weekend of February as we approach Superbowl XLV and begin a great month for the arts here in San Diego County. There may be only 28 days in the month, but they will each be jam-packed with a multitude of events happening across the area for men, women, couples, and families. So check it out!

Art Events

Starting this Saturday, February 5th is Mexico Expected/Unexpected at the Museum of Contemporary Art – La Jolla. There will be over 100 artworks selected from the Isabel and Agustín Coppel Collection, one of Mexico’s most comprehensive contemporary art collections, until May 15th.

While the exhibit lasts for a few months, save money during February’s San Diego Museum Month! Stop by a Macy’s near you to grab a FREE Museum Month Pass which grants you and up to three guests half-off admission to 40 of the museums around the county.  In addition to the MCASD, participating museums include the Museum of Photographic Arts, the San Diego Museum of Man, the Birch Aquarium, and the San Diego Botanic Gardens. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, start planning your visit now! Get more info from the SDEntertainer here on where to go and what to do.

The artistry doesn’t end there! This weekend will also host some great poetry events. First on Thursday, February 3nd, Collective Purpose presents Elevated!,a bi-monthly poetry event at Eveoke’s North Park Studio. Every first and third Thursday of the month, hop over to North Park at 9pm to revel in a great night of poetry and spoken word with a wonderful group of artists. Then on Friday, February 4th, head up to The Loft at UCSD for another night of poery with The Whirlwind Company. This collective of four incredibly talented poets–Mindy Nettifee, Brian S. Ellis, Jon Sands, and Mike McGee– join Jeff Berkeley on their San Diego stop of their nationwide tour to share some of their work.

Concerts

With the numerous amazing venues all around San Diego, it is no surprise  that a wide variety of music artists visit the county everyday and this weekend is no exception. Start the weekend early on Thursday by enjoying a performance from Melissa Polinar in The Loft at UCSD or Grace Potter & The Nocturnals with Chamberlin at the House of Blues. Then a full weekend of entertainment at the HoB as The Burnsville Band takes the stage of Saturday with Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses and The Silent Comedy rocking out on Sunday.

Also here this weekend is Southern California native Julieta Venegas, who will be at 4th & B Friday presented by Jack Daniels, as well as violinist David Garrett in concert at the Balboa Theatre presented by Square Peg.

Sports

Fresh off a challenging win against the Colorado State Rams (56-54) on Wednesday, the San Diego State Men’s Basketball team will face Texas Christian University on Saturday, February 5th. The SDSU Aztecs, currently ranked at #7 in the nation, will go against the TCU Horned Frogs at  730PM at the sold out Viejas Arena . Do not miss out!

Are you ready for some football? Super Bowl XLV: Pittsberg Steelers vs. Green Bay Packers is this Sunday, so get that bean dip and guacamole ready.
