This Weekend in SD: Comedy, Cupcakes and Concerts

In San Diego, there’s always a way to give back. This weekend, take the time to support the arts with movies, benefit concerts and other charitable events.

Music

This Sunday, head to the University of San Diego for the 6th annual USD Summer Chamber Music Festival, presented by USD’s College of Arts and Sciences and the FanFaire Foundation. Classical music lovers can enjoy the sounds of Bartok, Prokofiev and Rossini. The festival brings musicians of all ages together with instructors from USD and the San Diego Symphony to create beautiful concerts. Thefestival begins at 2 p.m. and costs $12 for general admission, $10 for seniors and $5 for students and USD faculty, staff and alumni.
Those who prefer rock music can also check out School of Rock presents the Rock the House Tour featuring the School of Rock AllStars this Saturday at Queen Bee’s Art and Cultural Center. According to the organization’s website, “The AllStar Program is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student and is comprised of the top 2.5 percent of our students nationwide. The AllStars tour each summer with the best kids from each local school from all around the USA … This year, students from across the country will be celebrating 50 years of Rock and Roll with the Rock the House Tour.” All proceeds from this tour go to local Ronald McDonald houses and local Ronald McDonald House Charities. Tickets are $20 and the show starts at 3 p.m.

Events

Those looking for a laugh should check out Comedy Fundraiser, Laugh Out Loud – The Comics’ Benefit for FilmOut this Saturday at 8 p.m. at Birch North Park Theater. This is the first annual comedy fundraiser for FilmOut San Diego in conjunction with Blackwell-Black productions. “We are glad we can bring nationally-known comics of film and TV to support FilmOut San Diego,” Co-founder of Blackwell-Black Productions Randal Black said. “We are thrilled to help raise crucial funds for such an amazing, vital LGBT Film Festival.” The event will feature comics Shawn Pelofsky, Vicki Barbolak, Justin Martindale and Jackie Monahan.

The 11th annual Extreme Autofest returns to Qualcomm Stadium this Sunday at 11 a.m. According to the website, patrons can see “tons of the baddest imports, domestics, euros, SUV’s, lowriders, mini trucks, classics, hot rods, (and) motorcycles … plus live music performances on the main stage, huge breakdancing battle, lowrider car hop, and more! The Extreme Autofest event: hundreds of cars, thousands of people.” The promoters also say the even brings today’s youth lifestyle together with cars, music, fashion and electronics. Tickets are $35-$45.

Movies

Landmark Theatres wants you to “Bring a little late-night movie madness to your summer at one of the last single-screen theaters in San Diego” as part of its Midnight Madness Movies series. The company will be showing the classic film “A Clockwork Orange” at midnight this Saturday, a satirical horror movie based on Anthony Burgess’ 1963 novel. Tickets are available at theLandmark Ken Theater or landmarktheatres.com and are $8.50.

San Diegans can also take part in the Summer Movies by the Lake series, hosted by Santee Lakes, who is celebrating its 50thanniversary. The first 1,000 guests will receive free anniversary cupcakes and there will be games to play before the movie begins. This weekend will be showing “Open Season 3” and each carload costs $8. Gates open at 4 p.m., the picnic starts at 6 p.m., games start at 7 p.m. and the movie will begin at 8 p.m.
