Girl power will be in abundance this August when the Supergirl Pro Junior surf contest comes to Oceanside.

The worlds top female pro surfers will gather for the only 6-star pro junior surf contest in North America. The girls will be competing for the Supergirl Cape, which, along with a cash prize, will be awarded to the winner.

The competitors will be 16 of the best 20-year-old and younger female surfers from around the world, including Coco Ho, defending champion and 6th ranked in the world, Courtney Conlongue, ranked 7th, Laura Enever, ranked 10th, Leila Hurst, ranked 5th, Lakey Peterson, ranked 7th in the Women’s World Rankings, and Malia Manuel, last year’s silver medalist and former Women’s U.S. Open Champion, ranked 2nd in the world.

“I am really excited to competing in the Supergirl Pro Junior again,” Ho said in a press release. “It’s an amazing field of surfers competing this year, and as the defending champion, I know the other girls will be gunning to get my pink cape.”

The surf competition will take place Aug. 13 at the Oceanside Pier as the first event of the 2011 Supergirl Jam series, which promoters describe as the action sports industry’s largest all-female competition and lifestyle series. The event will feature more than 100 female pros in surfing, skateboarding, inline skating and snowboarding. The second day will be Aug. 21 at the Venice Beach boardwalk and will include both skate and snow contests.

“The event is always super fun and the whole Supergirl Jam series sends out such a positivemessage about female empowerment,” Conlogue said. “I am really happy to be a part of the contest and all that it stands for.”

The surf competition begins at 11:15 a.m. and will feature a series of head-to-head heats. The finals are scheduled for 2:15 p.m. Admission to the event is free. The entire Supergirl Jam series will be broadcast nationally in October on Fox Sports Net and Fuel TV.
