Earth Week 2011

By  |

Sunday marked the start of Earth Week, a week completely dedicated to honoring the Earth and emphasizing environmental concerns around the world.

Well celebrated each year, the celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd has been around for 41 years. Earth Day was founded by U.S. senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970 who brought environmental issues to attention after decades of lack of concern over the planet. On April 22, 1970, Nelson successfully received the support of over 20 million people around the U.S. to rally around the streets to bring into light issues of pollution and global inattention to the public. In 1990, Earth Day went international, now recognized and celebrated by over 175 countries around the world.

Although the official Earth Day, April 22nd has yet to arrive, the celebration has already started last Sunday, April 17th, at Balboa Park with its 22nd annual EarthFair where over 400 volunteers helped prepare for the many events that day. Highlights include the Children’s Earth Parade where participants dressed up as endangered species and marched throughout Balboa Park to raise awareness. There were also exhibits representing different environmentally friendly products, services, and tips.

Events for this Friday, April 22nd include an Earth Day event held at the UTC Shopping Mall in La Jolla from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm where visitors can not only look around the exhibits, but also touch sea creatures in touch tanks. The mall will also be giving away “Green Giveaways” at the event.

This Saturday, April 23rd, Kimball Park in National City California is also expecting a great turnout for its Earth Day celebration at the Recycling Cultural Arts Pavilion. They will be holding events ranging from art-making activities, info booths on “eco fashions”, and will have a lineup of performance artists which include East of Echo, Communist Kayte, and The Entities among others. Lastly they will also provide a Free E-waste Drop Off for people to recycle their electronic products.
