April Showers mark the return of Carlsbad Flower Fields

Springtime for different cities can mean different things.  In San Diego it means there will be a bit of drizzle that magically prohibits people from driving more than 40 mph on the freeway, a week long hot spell that teases you about summer being on the horizon, and (like clockwork) the Carlsbad Flower Fields are in full bloom.  The flower field is now open and will be closing May 13th.  The flower fields are open in all their colorful, springtime glory.

This year marks a slight change in the flower fields long history of growing and selling beautiful flowers.  For the first time in 15 years, the 50 acres of flowers are changing its color pattern to please both old and new visitors to the fields. According to The Flower Fields website the new look was “designed by a professional colorist” and “the 50 acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers will cascade down the hillside in a spectacular display of colors sure to take your breath away”

The numerous fields of bright colors form a sea of flowers that reflect the impressive vastness of the nearby Pacific Ocean.  While at the Flower Fields there are a wide array of activities to partake in that tie in with the flowery theme.  Amid the flowers that have been left in the fields to display their natural beauty, there are displays in which the flowers have been to illustrate how colors can be arranged and enjoyed in gardens at home.   There are also attractions that are family friendly like a Sweet Pea Maze and an antique tractor ride that will play an audio of the history of the fields and how they emerged from humble beginnings.  Another huge drawn is the giant American flag made out of different colored flowers strategically planted in a field that expands a 300 by 170 foot area to show a patriotic pride.

If you ever want to appreciate a local treasure a stroll around the fields is necessary.  Every year The Flower Fields are a popular destination for tourists and locals alike and it will continue to mark the presence of Spring for San Diego.
