Things to-do in San Diego: Fourth of July Weekend

This Fourth of July weekend, many San Diegans are going all-out to celebrate our nation’s observance of the Declaration of Independence.  To commemorate this historic moment, locals can participate in the following activities that includes: picnics on the beach, BBQs, and, of course, great music to accompany the moving spectacle of fireworks in our skies.

Be on the lookout for the usual and unusual things you can do while in San Diego.  Jazz things up while at the Carlsbad TGIF concert series, or dabble into the matters of the heart at the San Diego County Fair, or if you want, put into the works a weekend spent at California Legoland.  Can’t wait?  Be sure you plan ahead, so that you won’t be missing a minute of this fun-filled weekend!

San Diego County Fair 2011 – Opened from June 10 to July 4, 2011, this is your last weekend to visit the fair.  For fans of rides and games, this annual San Diego carnival has about 79 rides total along with many games that will test the player’s skill.  Show off your winning streak and win-prizes for your loved ones.  Or visit some of the county’s most talented artists whose fine works of art are on exhibit at the fair.  After the fun and games and your moment of cultivation for the day, make sure you dine on some infamous delectables like deep-fried butter and Kool-aid.  With so many choices to choose from, you can eat until your heart’s content.  Closed on every Monday except July 4th, the San Diego Country Fair’s electric fireworks display, which will be presented at 9:30pm, will provide an apt ending to this fun-filled extravaganza.

Carlsbad TGIF Jazz in the Parks – This July 4th weekend, Carsbad TGIF Jazz in the Parks is kicking off its annual concert series held every Friday evening in late June until mid-August.  Available will be great music, great dancing, and great fun for the jazz lover in you.  A lot of talented bands will be performing onstage, but before you attend a concert make sure you visit the site for concert do’s and don’ts in order to get the best possible concert-going experience offered.  Concerts begin 6:00pm – 8:00pm and are free.

July 4th Picnic and Fireworks at La Jolla Shores and La Jolla Cove Concert – Picnic at Kellogg Park, located next to La Jolla Shores.  This is a great place to enjoy the beachy weather slated for this 4th of July weekend.  Arrive early for parking and claim your spot for the day so that you can get yourselves situated for the fireworks scheduled at 9:00pm.  Also if you’re on the other side of the pond, so to speak, enjoy the free concert at Ellen Browning Scripps Park at 5pm, which is located on La Jolla Cove.  Music, fun, and post-June gloom celebratory weather – it can’t get any better than this!

Coronado Independence Day Celebration and Fireworks
– Come celebrate Independence Day on Coronado Island.  With a jam-packed schedule that will indulge in all sorts of artistic aesthetics from art works to beauty pageants and even fitness, arrive early so that you can busy yourself with one or a few of these fun-filled activities.   Starting at 7:00am is the annual Independence Day 15K Run-5K Run/Walk at Tideland park, and at 9:00am is the annual Rough Water Swim at Coronado City Beach.  Watch the Independence Day Parade on July 4th in downtown at 10:00am on Orange Ave, and enjoy the concert in the park at 4:00pm, as well as the fireworks at Glorietta Bay at 9:00pm.

– For a good view of the largest fireworks display in the San Diego-area, pick a good spot near Seaport Village, Coronado Ferry Landing, Spanish Landing, Embarcadero Marina Parks North and South, Cesar Chavez Park, Coronado Tidelands Park, Imperial Beach Pier, Shelter Island and Harbor Island.  Starting at 9:00pm, fireworks will be discharged simultaneously from barges placed off Shelter Island, Harbor Island, North Embarcadero, and Chula Vista.  Call (619) 686-6200 for parking and shuttle information on one of the best San Diego events for 4th of July.

Independence Day at Legoland
– Come help celebrate California Leogland’s Fourth of July extravaganza event, “Red, White and BOOM!”  The fireworks show will begin at 8:30pm, blending patriotic music with dazzling arrays of pyrotechnics.  During the day, kids of all ages can anticipate in the entire family participating in picnic games like water-balloon fights, burlap sack races and paper airplane contests.  The celebratory event also includes live musical performances at 5:30pm and 7:30 pm by a few of the hottest children entertainers out there.

Movies Released this Weekend – If you’re not up for staying outdoors in this anticipatory scorcher of a weekend, put away your sun-block and shades and retire into the cool interior and magical realm of the movies.  Here’s a list of summer movies that are opening this week:
