Earth Day in San Diego

By  |

Earth Day is this Sunday, April 22nd, and there are many ways to celebrate and educate yourself around San Diego. But what is Earth Day and how did it begin?

earth day 2012Wikipedia explains, “Earth Day is a day early each year on which events are held worldwide to increase awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s natural environment. Earth Day is now coordinated globally by theEarth Day Network, and is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year.”

Earth Day was first observed in San Francisco and other cities on March 21, 1970. People have begun to embrace this celebratory day largely due to the increased awareness surrounding global warming and the impact humans have on the environment.

How is San Diego celebrating? Along with hiking, biking, gardening, and being outdoors for this upcoming weekend, the largest event in the city will be EarthFair.

earth fairEarthFair 2012 is being held in Balboa Park, and it is reportedly the largest free annual environmental fair in the world. Yearly the EarthFair draws nearly 60,000 visitors to Balboa Park.

Two hundred exhibitors will be displaying information and products from organic gardening to alternative emissions vehicles. In addition to the displays, of course there will also be entertainment and food.

The EarthFair boasts three stages worth of entertainment including the Children’s Stage, The Moon Stage, featuring a variety of contemporary music by local artists, and the Folk Music Stage, hosted by the San Diego Folk Music Heritage Society.

The childrens’ area is particularly special, and makes the event family friendly and educational. Kids will enjoy crafts, games, face painting, storytelling, and a hands-on activities.

If you’ve never been, EarthFair 2012 will not disappoint. It’s a fantastic event for the entire family and will be a great way to celebrate the beautiful weather in this beautiful city we all call home.

San Diego resident for over 10 years, I now call this beautiful city home. Originally from the Bay Area, I’m a California girl at heart. I love the outdoors, fitness, food, and a good craft beer (from San Diego of course).
