Shake Shack Coming to San Diego

By  |

It’s official! The New York based Shake Shack will be coming to San Diego, taking up a space in Westfield UTC in 2017. On the Shake Shack blog, it clearly says, “We’re goin’ back to Cali! After coasting to the West Coast earlier this year, Shake Shack is heading southward to San Diego in 2017.”

The restaurant will offer all the Shake Shack classics, from delicious 100% all-natural Angus beef burgers and cage-free chicken to crinkle-cut fries and spun-fresh frozen custard. Plus, there will be frozen custard concretes featuring local San Diego food purveyors.

For those of us that don’t  know much about the chain, the company prides itself in using all-natural 100% angus beef that is free of hormones and antibiotics. The company has a cult-like following that rivals that of In-N-Out.

Time will tell how well the Shack does in the California market, and this California-girl and In-N-Out lover is willing to give it a try. Shake Shack currently has locations in West Hollywood, Hollywood and Glendale.  Based on Yelp reviews, the Shack averages 3.5 Stars on Yelp. In-N-Out appears to average 4 Stars on Yelp. Thrillist published a story in 2014 comparing both establishments if you’d like to check it out.

As for its San Diego location, the Shack will be constructed with recycled and sustainable materials. Chairs and booths will be made from lumber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, and tabletops will be made from reclaimed bowling alley lanes from Brooklyn’s CounterEvolution.

In 2010, Shake Shack opened its first restaurant outside of New York City in South Beach, Miami. Shake Shack now has locations in Connecticut, Washington, DC, Florida, Georgia, Chicago, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Texas, Arizona and California.

San Diego resident for over 10 years, I now call this beautiful city home. Originally from the Bay Area, I'm a California girl at heart. I love the outdoors, fitness, food, and a good craft beer (from San Diego of course).
