Michael Learned, Cathy Rigby Star In ‘Steel Magnolias’
Welk Resorts Theatre spotlights legendary actresses Michael Learned and Cathy Rigby as the matrons of Steel Magnolias visit San Diego, Jan. 7-24.
The ladies of Steel Magnolias have been raised as delicate flowers, yet can handle anything. Funny one-liners abound in this “cosmetically perfect” gossipfest at Truvy’s Beauty Parlor among the six ladies who rule the roost in a small, sleepy Louisiana town. The resulting comedy-drama boasts crackling dialogue, emotional thunderbolts and eccentricity in abundance. All the while, Truvy’s strict philosophy that “there is no such thing as natural beauty” holds sway front and center, though the “regulars” do radiate a gentility that “hugs the heart” with both poignancy and hilarity, producing its own recipe for innate beauty.
Michael Learned is a four-time, Emmy award-winning actress, three for The Waltons and one for Nurse. She has a People’s Choice Award and has been a three-time Golden Globe nominee. On stage, she recently starred with Tom Bosley in the national tour of On Golden Pond and in Lewis Black’s One Slight Hitch.
Cathy Rigby earned a Tony nomination when she starred in the 35th Anniversary production of Peter Pan on Broadway. Subsequently, her multiple talents have been lauded on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre as the Cat-In-The-Hat in Seussical the Musical. Prior to taking the stage, Rigby captured the world spotlight with her gymnastics at the 1968 Olympics.
Also starring Emma Fassler, Christa Jackson, Amy Sloan and Rosina Reynolds. Directed by Brian Kite, this production was co-produced with McCoy Rigby Entertainment and the La Mirada Center for the Performing Arts.
