Vonda Shepard at The Belly Up Aug. 13
Shepard has sold 12 million albums, received two Screen Actor’s Guild Awards and a Billboard prize for selling the most television soundtrack records in history for the hit TV series “Ally McBeal.” “Rookie” is the first album of new material in seven years and fans can listen live this August in San Diego.
Shepard says, “For me, ‘Rookie’ is a landmark album. Suddenly, I’m a highly experienced human, who has nothing to lose, so I’m throwing myself out there on this album in a very raw, real and unadorned way.”
Following the trend of many artists lately, “Rookie” was funded through Kickstarter and under her own label. It marks Shepard’s sixth collaboration with producer Mitchell Froom. The tone of “Rookie” harks back to the raw soul and sound of the seventies, sometimes reminiscent of the early Aretha days. “The album features songs looking back on long lost love, fading into the distance, from the perspective of a person who is digging deeper and reconciling these relationships,” says Shepard.
