This Weekend in SD: Box Cars, Kittens and a Dance Party

Find out what’s going on in San Diego this weekend, including music, theater, community events, and movie and album releases.

Theater

This  Saturday, bring the kids to the 2nd annual local playwrights showcase at the Coronado Playhouse, performing “The Adventures of Patty-Cat & Kittle.” Children can enjoy face painting and a coloring contest starting at 6 p.m. and listen to the story-telling at 7 p.m., which will have characters in full costume with songs and action.

On Saturday or Sunday, watch one of the oldest and best-loved fairy tales of all time on the stage.  Rodgers and Hammerstein’s romantic comedy “Cinderella” comes to life with the Christian Youth Theater at 2 p.m. and a 7 p.m. performance on Saturday. Tickets are $10-$15.

Music

Catch Mexican pop cultural icon Vicente Fernández this Friday at the Valley View Casino Center, formerly the San Diego Sports Arena. Known as The King of the Ranchera throughout the Latin world, Fernández has recorded more than 50 albums and contributed to many movies. The show begins at 8 p.m. and tickets are $49-$149.

Then on Saturday, witness the Animal House event with supporting acts Stir Crazy, Dipsia, Mr. Nice Guy and more at House of Blues. This 18+ dance party begins at 9 p.m. General admission tickets are $10 in advance and $30 at the door.

Community Events

Throughout the entire weekend, catch “Cinema Under the Stars: The Big Lebowski” at Mission Hills, 4040 Goldfinch Street. The movie follows an unemployed slacker and avid bowler, who calls himself “The Dude.” After a case of mistaken identity, The Dude is introduced to a millionaire with the same name. When the millionaire’s trophy wife is kidnapped, he commissions The Dude to deliver the ransom to secure her release. The movie starts at 8:30 p.m. and tickets are $14-$15.

The San Diego All American Soap Box Derby will begin on Saturday at 9 a.m. and will last until 7 p.m. on 25th street. Youths age 8-17 will be racing down a sloped hill with soap box cars they created themselves under supervised guidance. This family event is free and is expected to yield a large turnout.
