Glee Super Bowl Commercial & Post Game Show

By  |

Decked-out in white, the cast of the hit FOX TV show Glee performs alongside rival ‘cheerios’ cheerleaders in an advertisement for the General Motors Chevrolet Volt electric car.  They revive the 1950’s jingle, ‘See the USA in Your Chevrolet’ in an in-character performance for the two-minute commercial during the show.

The cast of Glee continues the Superbowl commercial madness in its 11th episode of Season 2 with the help of sponsor, General Motors.

This highly anticipated Glee episode denotes the end of a month-long, mid-season break.  It returns with its most expensive episode yet, at around $3-5 million to make.  Marked by the typical glee club vs. cheerleaders and football players rivalry, this episode attempts to showcase major plot changes with Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) and Quinn’s (Dianna Agron) relationship, and emotional progress in the bully, Dave Karofsky (Max Adler).  It also features Rachel, Mercedes, Tina and Lauren as the newest members of the football team.  However, any significance of these developments are overshadowed by the over-production of the entire episode.  Why is Glee choosing to highlight commercial success over the plot-line and music?

For Money, of course.  While the lead Rachel (Lea Michele) and other cast members’ salaries per episode remain undisclosed, the show rakes in about 10-12 million viewers every week.  Those numbers testify to the nation that Glee doesn’t need a significant plot change or to even somewhat resemble the reality of gleekster popularity anxiety.  Sticking to the over-the-top, performance-based extravaganza, the enterprise is doing just fine.

The final number of the episode showcased a much anticipated mash-up of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs “Heads Will Roll” as leaked by earlier sources.

Still, what happened to the quirky, fun, high school drama, angst-ridden dilemmas of Season 1? And when are we to meet Rachel’s (Lea Michele) gay dads?

The next episode of Glee will air Tuesday, February 8th at 8pm on the FOX Network.
