Blast Off at the Fleet in July

The Reuben H. Fleet Space Center is one of the treasures of Balboa Park and of San Diego. Summertime activities continue in July. Here are some highlights:

* Perception: See Beyond the Illusion * July 5 through Aug. 31 * Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday * 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. * Witness mind-blowing illusions when the World Champion of Magic, Jason Latimer, presents his one-of-a-kind show live in the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater * Latimer combines magic and science to amaze and enlighten *

* Destination Station * Opens July 12 * Ever wonder what it’s like to be an astronaut and to live and work in space? * You’ll get insights into that experience from NASA’s newest multimedia exhibit, Destination Station *

* Hidden Universe * Opens July 12 * Continue your exploration of outer space with the giant IMAX® adventure Hidden Universe, which takes audiences on an extraordinary journey deep into space * View the earliest galaxies, watch stars being born in vivid clouds of gas and dust, tour the surface of Mars and witness images of distant celestial structures, including stunning views of the Sun *

* Back To The Moon For Good * Showing Monday through Thursday at 5 p.m. beginning July 14 * Immerse yourself in a race to return to the Moon * See how a competition among privately funded international teams is ushering in a new era of lunar exploration *

* Family Science Saturdays: Tinkering Skills Labs * Saturdays, July 5, 12, 19 and 26 * 1 to 3 p.m. * From soldering and sawing to hammering and drilling, hone your tinkering and building skills through a wide range of fantastic skill-based workshops * Activities free with paid admission to museum *

* Tinkerers’ Club * Saturdays, July 5, 12, 19 and 26 * 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. * Learn new skills and work on fun projects that you get to take home with you * This month’s activities include creating a turbine, constructing a puzzle, building a catapult and designing your own wooden racing vehicle * Prices (per project): $12 members, $15 nonmembers * Advance registration is recommended *

* Geocaching Challenge *  Saturday, July 12 * Noon to 2 p.m. * Hands-on scavenger hunt conducted by the Saturday Science Club for Girls * Learn the basics of GPS and navigation, and then put your skills to the test by tracking down hidden treasure planted in Balboa Park! * For girls in grades 5-8  * Second Saturday of each month *
