Chargers plan “White Hot Sunday” for home opener versus Seahawks

By  |

chargershomeopener1The Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks journey to Qualcomm Stadium this Sunday, and the Chargers and their fans are cooking up a special welcome for them. For what they are dubbing “White Hot Sunday”, our Chargers will be wearing all white uniforms for the third home opener in a row, and they are asking all attendees to the game to do the same.

They are encouraging everyone there to blind the world champs in a dazzle of white shirts and pants and towels and flags (wait, not white flags, please!). Many of the players have made social network and on-air appeals for the fans to be loud and to wear white in a bid to answer Seattle’s famed “12th Man” fan participation.chargershomeopener2

Fan involvement in this kind of promotion is fun, and may even inspire the Chargers to play up to the level of the Seahawks. However, most fans and experts are more curious as to whether Philip Rivers will challenge all-galaxy cornerback Richard Sherman and throw to the receivers he covers, something quarterback Aaron Rogers of the Packers never did last Thursday. Seattle defeated Green Bay easily by a 36-16 score, while the Chargers were edged by the Arizona Cardinals 18-17 on Monday in a game they probably should have won.

Meanwhile, long-time center Ken Hardwick (drafted along with Rivers) is out for the season. His place as offensive co-captain has been filled by Antonio Gates, as voted by the team. Gates himself, however, has been held out of practice due to a hamstring problem, and may end up doing his captaining from the sidelines.

chargershomeopeners3Will the White Hot Sunday affect the Seahawks? Will the fans at Qualcomm be any where near as loud as the Seattle home crowd? Those with tickets to the sold-out opener will see it all in-person. For the rest of us, tune in on Sunday at 1:05 to find out. Go Chargers!
