San Diego State Basketball No. 2 in the NCAA Championships

Victorious! No. 6 ranked SDSU not only put No. 8 ranked BYU in their place, but received top honors in finishing out this weekend’s tournament series with flying colors.

Their rivals all season have been the top-seeded Brigham Young Cougars who lost to SDSU last Saturday in a blow out game, 72-54.  SDSU avenged its only two losses of the season at the Mountain West Conference Tournament in Las Vegas over the weekend.

Selection Sunday did not disappoint for the Aztecs.

Their triumph paid off. The selection committee announced SDSU to take the No. 2 seed in the West Region of the 2011 NCAA Championships.  BYU follows not far behind with the No. 3 seed, still a looming threat to our beloved Aztecs.

Aztec junior forward Tim Shelton is supremely confident, “I really feel like this worked out perfectly for us,” Shelton said to SDSU’s Daily Aztec. “It’d be nice to have a one seed, but at the same time, hey, we’re in Arizona.” The Aztecs are in it to win it.

They are playing in Tucson, Arizona this Thursday against No. 15 seed Northern Colorado, a team they have beat five out of the last six times they’ve played each other.  The Aztecs are going into the championships strong, confident and energetic.

“Our mentality is we’ve got the two seed,” Shelton said. “We feel like we’re better than the teams we’re going to be playing and we should win.”

Let’s root for the San Diego State Aztecs this Thursday on their quest for an NCAA Title.
