Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth engaged

Earlier this year rumors surfaced that Miley Cyrus, 19, was engaged to long time on again off again boyfriend and Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth, 22.  The speculation began with the circulation of a picture on Cyrus’s twitter account that showed her flaunting a new manicure with a ring on her left hand’s ring finger.  The rumors were quickly quieted by Cyrus tweeting, “I’m not engaged. I’ve worn this same ring on this finger since November! People just wanna find something to talk about! It’s a topaz people!”

Apparently, those rumors about the engagement between the couple were just a practice run.  Now after the two have been caught gushing about each other on multiple occasions, they’ve officially announced that they are in fact engaged. On May 31 Hemsworth proposed to Cyrus.  People Magazine reported that both of the stars’ reps confirmed that this time the engagement is real and the couple is smitten with the idea of starting a life together.

“I’m so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam,” Cyrus told People.

The couple is young, but have already been together for about three years.  The two met on set of the movie The Last Song (2009).  Hemsworth described the feeling of falling for Cyrus on set in an interview with Details.  “She makes me really happy,” he gushed. “When you start (filming), you want to be professional, but when you’re filming those scenes with someone and pretending to love them, you’re not human if you don’t feel something.”

Nicki Minaj cancels concert in New York

According to Nicki Minaj, she gained a valuable lesson in “self-worth” this weekend when the head of her label, Lil Wayne, pulled her and the rest of his roster from a summer concert on Sunday night.  The concert was held by the New York hip-hop station Hot 97 and the cancellation included other artists besides Minaj.

The problem started when Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenburg declared that Nicki Minaj’s music was not “real hip-hop.” Entertainment Weekly reported that Rosenburg clarified his actions on his own radio show.

“I need it be clear. I gave an opinion on a song…And Nicki Minaj decided to skip Summer Jam. Because of an opinion, not a personal attack, nothing derogatory because she’s a woman. That’s why music is so mediocre nowadays, because no one can give opinions. If you give an opinion, cats hate you, their crew skips your concert, they diss you on Twitter, their boyfriends threaten to punch you in the face.”

The fight blew up on Twitter and on the radio.  On opposing sides Rosenburg was stressing his belief about expressing one’s opinion on music, while Minaj was arguing the importance of an artist’s integrity.  In the end she walked away from the argument with the belief that she gained a serious lesson and was in the right to leave the show.  The organization behind the concert is currently saying that no refunds will be given for the show. Nas and Lauryn Hill filled Minaj’s slot during the line-up.
