Earth Day activities in San Diego

Earth Day is kind of a big thing here in San Diego, and that’s no joke. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Take the time to consider what you can do to take action and mitigate climate change, utilize alternative energy, and be more energy efficient.  If you have time, you should check out all the events going on in San Diego to honor our wonderful home, the Earth!

EarthFair
Balboa Park, April 18, 2010 from 10AM5PM
If your calendar does not have EarthFair marked down for this weekend, do it. EarthFair is one of  the largest celebrations of Earth Day in the world, featuring all things green and sustainable. This year marks the 20th anniversary of EarthFair in San Diego, featuring over 400 exhibits highlighting the latest green technology, ideas for a green lifestyle, and other Earth-friendly activities and entertainment. Visit the Children’s Area and participate in the Children’s Earth Parade, Cleaner Car Concourse, or check out the recycled materials art show.

Oceans: Disneynature
April 22nd, 2010 in theaters everywhere
If you missed seeing Disney’s EARTH in theaters last year, Disneynature’s new film OCEANS opens on Earth Day. The cinematography is absolutely breathtaking on the bigscreen, and you can help save oceans just by attending! For each moviegoer who sees the movie during opening week (April 22-28), Disneynature will give a portion of ticket sales to The Nature Conservancy to help protect threatened coral reefs in the Bahamas.

Earth Day San Clemente
Parque Del Mar, 10AM-2PM
Saturday April 17
The 6th annual Earth Day program from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at Parque Del Mar (above the pier, beach, and train station) features  entertainment, displays, children’s crafts, giveaways, and more. A beach cleanup will precede the event from 8:30-10 a.m.

Poway Earth Day Celebration
Sunday, April 25, 10AM-5PM.
Sponsored by the Poway Chamber of Commerce, the community event is planned along Midland Road between Poway Road and Hilleary Place. There will be dozens of vendor booths, two entertainment stages, a food court, and kids’ activity area.

UC San Diego EarthWeek 2010
April 19-23, 2010 at the UCSD Campus
Key events include the third annual campus bicycle commute challenge; a birthday celebration for conservationist John Muir and resource fair on April 21; a clean car show and educational panels on April 22; and a tree planting, eco-fashion show, and “Muirstock” music festival on Friday, April 23. The campus will be accepting electronic waste all week for proper disposal.

Earth Day North
Oceanside, at Mission San Luis Rey
10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, April 25.
The annual festival, known as Earth Day North will be at 4050 Mission Boulevard. Mission San Luis Rey is one of San Diego County’s oldest historical sites, and this family event will feature lectures, music, food, educational exhibits, and more.
