This Weekend in SD: Films, Festivals and Food Trucks

By  |

Get ready for a crazy fun weekend with shows and festivals galore. Check out local student films, cheer on derby babes, and get tickets to the gun show all here in San Diego County.

Competition

Test your skill and resolve this Saturday with the Ridiculous Obstacle Challenge at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. It will be a challenging, 5K race through a military-style obstacle course with wildly fun challenges throughout including monkey bars, rope swings, climbing walls and more.

Then Saturday night, head over to Skateworld in Linda Vista for the San Diego Roller Derby Rockettes season opener. Our lovely local ladies on wheels will be facing off against the Inland Empire Derby Divas.

Shows

Stroll over to San Diego State University’s Don Powell Theatre for this semester’s Filmmakers Showcase. For only $10 support the programs and see the future of film as students present their projects on the big screen.  Who knows? The next Steven Spielberg or Katherine Bigelow could come from right here in San Diego.

This weekend at O’Brien Hall in the Del Mar Fairgrounds is the Crossroads of the West Gun Show which will include exhibits for hunters and gun collectors. Also gun-slinging is comedian Rex Navarrete, shooting jokes and jabs at the House of Blues.

Food Festivals

Be sure to check out the three-day Food Trucks & Fun, a gourmet food truck festival being held at various Boomers throughout the weekend. The trucks from both around the San Diego and Los Angeles area will be making collective stops each day and traveling throughout the county. Participants include Kalbi Q, Sweet Treats Truck, Tapa Boy, and many more. Their first stop will be the Clairemont Mesa location on Friday.

Then stop by Little Italy on Sunday for the 18th Annual 2011 Sicilian Festival for an afternoon of cultural cuisine and entertainment. It is a free event featuring children’s rides and a traditional grape stomp. Are you a fan of Giada De Laurentiis? She will be doing a cooking demonstration at 2:30pm and will be signing cookbooks at 3:30pm. Also stay tuned to the Entertianer for an interview with Giada; she’ll provide some summer cooking tips and ideas.

Music

This is the last weekend to enjoy SeaWorld’s  Viva La Musica, a Latin music festival featuring live performances as well as authentic cuisine. Also check out artists visiting some of the great San Diego Venues including Yelle with French Horn Rebellion at The Casbah on Friday and Lita Ford with special guest Gary Hoey at the House of Blues on Sunday.
