This Weekend in San Diego (3/10 – 3/12): Sports, Flowers, Music and More

The weekend starts tomorrow and since you’re already thinking about it, why not make plans now? There are all sorts of events going on in the city Friday through Sunday, and we found some of the most exciting ones for you to take advantage of.

Friday, March 10th

Hockey

The San Diego Gulls face off against the Tuscon Roadrunners at Valley View Casino Center! Tickets start at just $19 and the game starts at 7pm. Even if you don’t consider yourself a hockey fan, nothing beats watching live sports on a Friday night.

Nature/Outdoors

With the weather getting warmer and no clouds in the forecast, now is the perfect time to go stargazing at Mission Trails Regional Park. This guided nature walk is led by the San Diego Astronomy Association. They provide you with telescopes to view the stars and planets as you journey through the moonlight. The event starts at 7pm and lasts until 10pm. Meet the rest of the attendees at the east end of the Kumeyaay Lake Campground’s Day Use Lot.

Looking for other outdoor activities, the Cherry Blossom Festival is happening in Balboa Park’s Japanese Friendship Garden, the Carlsbad Flower Fields are in bloom, and the Anza-Borrego Desert is starting its annual show.

Saturday, March 11th

Music

Head to Pepper Park in National City this Saturday to enjoy some authentic Mexican music at the International Mariachi Festival. This event lasts all day from 11am to 7pm, with fun events and activities for everyone. Mariachi bands from both, the U.S. and Mexico will play and other arts will be showcased. Kids are welcome, the event features “an active Family Arena including live entertainment on the kid’s stage, WOW factors attractions, face painting, caricatures, a large inflatable rock climbing wall, experience virtual reality, and arts and crafts.” There’s a beer garden for those 21+ as well. No tickets are required and parking is only $10.

Country superstar and Voice judge Blake Shelton is taking the stage at Valley View Casino Center Saturday night. The show starts at 7:30pm and will be opened by singer Raelynn. Tickets start at $42.50.

For Kids

The 22nd annual Youth Fitness Expo takes place from 12:30pm to 4pm on Saturday at Balboa Park. The event features “carnival games, fitness activities, educational exhibits, raffles and performances” all at the Organ Pavilion. Join California Fitness Fun and Heartlight San Diego at this year’s expo where over 100 of San Diego’s elementary schools will perform. It’s fun, free, and all about kids.

Drinks

Advertised as “Will Ferrel’s Beer Fest of Choice,” there’s no question that Best Coast Beer Fest will be a great time. “If you’re interested in going to the most amazing beer festival in the history of mankind while helping out a great cause, keep reading. If not, please take a moment to throw your computer into the ocean,” Ferrel quotes on the fest’s website with a picture of his San Diegan character Ron Burgundy right next to it on the page. All proceeds go to the charity Cancer for College, which assists cancer survivors realize the dream of pursuing a college education. So head down to the Embarcadero Marina Park South at 1pm to drink some good beer, food and music and support an amazing cause. Find tickets on GroupOn or purchase them here.

Sunday, March 12th

Shows

Cap off the weekend with a musical at the La Jolla playhouse. Disney’s Freaky Friday The Musical is showing at 2pm and 7pm this Sunday. The Washington Post called the play “a polished, peppy, modern fairy tale.” Who couldn’t use a little fairy tale magic these days? Tickets start at $63 for the evening show.
