San Diego Weekend Events: Head to the shore for some seaside (and snorkeling) fun all weekend long!

By  |

It’s a great weekend to live in Southern California. Despite summer closing out, a multitude of amazing events are happening around San Diego. We live in one of the few places where residents and visitors can spend a morning snorkeling with leopard sharks, revel in fine art the afternoon, and enjoy a live concert at night. Take advantage of these wonderful weekend opportunities!

Thursday, September 9

Support your San Diego Padres at Petco Park as they start off a four game series tonight at 7pm against the San Francisco Giants.

A lucky bunch of San Diegans get to soak up the sun at Humphrey’s By The Bay with Grammy-winning artist Sheryl Crow as she plays a sold out concert at 7:30pm tonight. If you missed out on tickets, don’t worry. Another great concert is available at Anthology featuring contemporary jazz guitarist Chris Standring.

Friday, September 10

Head downtown for the ultimate extended happy hour at the 16th Annual San Diego Festival of Beer held outdoors on Columbia & B Street. Featuring over 60 breweries and more than 150 craft beers, the city’s oldest and largest craft beer fest is the best way to start your weekend. From 6pm-11pm enjoy live music and beer tastings, the first 6,000 guests receive a special event logo tasting mug.

Jack FM presents the DSC 1st Annual “Love Your Show” Show at the Belly Up Tavern. This event is free for the first 200 guests, and only $5 otherwise from 4-6pm. More music can be enjoyed at Anthology as Lalah Hathaway, daughter of the famous soul singer Donnie Hathaway, as she sings her R&B chart toppers including “Forever, For Always, For Love.”

Wouldn’t it be nice to just listen to some classic American rock music? Well, head over to Humphrey’s By the Bay to get some good vibrations with The Beach Boys at 7:30 pm or get another chance to listen to the music of The Doobie Brothers at the Pechanga Resort and Casino.

Saturday, September 11

Get an awesome early start on your day with a Snorkeling Adventure! Hang out with the fine people at the Birch Aquarium as they had down to the La Jolla Shores to Snorkel with Sharks! That’s right! Get up close and personal with coastal sea life from 8am-10am.

Spend the rest of the day basking in music and art! Cruise over to The Jazz 88 Ocean Beach Music & Art Festival. Boasting 7 stages, 26 bands, and 60 artists, including Marcia Ball and the Charlie Hunter Trio, the OB Music Fest will surely be quite the spectacle from 11am to 7pm. If you still don’t have enough jazz in your system, check out jazz fusion guitarist Stanley Jordan at Anthology as he plays at 7:30pm and again t 9:30pm. Or you can watch Nick Hexum, lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the popular alternative rock band 311, as he rocks the Club Silk stage solo.

Sunday, September 12

There’s an amalgam of annual events occurring on this amazing weekend day. Enjoy some early morning excitement in the sand and sea at the 19th Annual Paddle for Clean Water Festival at the Ocean Beach Pier at 9am. Head down to the 5th Annual University Heights Arts Open and celebrate with the featured regional artists, playwrights, performers, and musicians. For more local love, check out Humphrey’s By the Bay for the 20th Annual San Diego Music Awards commending some of the county’s best. If you feel like staying in, you can still participate in the annual fun through your television set as Chelsea Handler hosts the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.

Don’t forget to show your grandma and grandpa you care by heading over to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park for the Grandparent’s Day Celebration. Admission is free for grandparents and their grandkids from 10am to 6pm.
