The Del Mar Racetrack is known worldwide as one of the top destinations for serious equestrian fans. July 16th marked the opening day of the 2015 racing season, and as always, drew thousands of spectators. Besides watching the horses, a part of the culture and past time is to dress to impress. People come to the track sporting their fanciest dresses, their best shoes, and their most over the top hats.

We were able to meet some fashionistas at the track that day and learn all about what it takes to get dapper with the best of them. The most important thing about getting dressed for Opening Day is to be comfortable. Since it is hot out and you will be in the sun and on your feet for most of the day, it is important to be comfortable above everything else. That being said, a nice suit, or a beautiful dress, will have race track attendees turning their heads.

A big part of the opening day at the race track is the hat contest. It has been a tradition for many years, and this year was no different. Women and men from all over San Diego came with their biggest and most flamboyant hats. The hats are a fun way to get dressed up and show off.

Crowds gather for the next race.

Then of course, the most important part of the day, is the horse races themselves. Jockeys, owners, and horses train all year for this big day. Huge prizes are awarded to the winners of each race, as well as high pay outs for fans who made the right bets.
