There are only a few days left until Earth Day, and America’s finest city is joining in on this celebration in which over 192 countries participate.

Earth Day, which is celebrated on April 22nd each year, is a festivity that is meant to bring awareness and to promote environmental protection.

Earth Day was once “International Mother Earth Day,” and was adopted by United Nations in 2009. It was originally spearheaded by John McConnell in 1969, when he proposed – at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco – that the date be in March 21, 1970. He chose this date because it is the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Shortly thereafter, a second “Earth Day” was started by Senator Gaylord Nelson, which was held on April 22, 1970. This celebration was a U.S. event, but Denis Hayes expanded the event and organized international activities in over 140 countries. Now, Earth Day is coordinated by Earth Day network and over 192 different countries participate every year.

San Diego is a great part of the annual festivities of Earth Day. On Earth Day, San Diego puts on one of the largest environmental fairs in the world. This year, Balboa Park will be celebrating the 24th annual Earth Fair and is expecting over 60,000 visitors and over 400 volunteers. Balboa will be featuring; exhibitions, a “clean” car concourse, live entertainment, food, a parade and art show.

This event will be a “Zero Waste” event, meaning that all the waste generated by the event will be recycled, reused or composted so that it does not end in a landfill. People will also be able to get educated on how to properly recycle, and to create a waste –free environment.
Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to remind ourselves about the importance of being environmentally conscious, and to educate ourselves on Earth-friendly practices and trends. Not to mention it’ll be a fun event, so don’t miss out on it! It takes place April 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and it is free for the whole family.
