On Saturday, July 27th, San Diegans at Mission Beach will face a challenge, “What will it take for you to surrender your cell phone?” LÄRABAR, maker of the original fruit and nut food bar, will pose that question to beach goers. Believing that “LESS CAN BE MORE” and tapping into the growing “unplugged” movement, from 10:00am to 6:00pm, the brand will encourage beach goers to store their digital devices for an afternoon of simple, pure fun at the beach.

“Simplicity is the core of our brand,” said Lara Merriken, founder of LÄRABAR. “Our lives have become so busy with digital distractions that sometimes it seems impossible to unplug. But what better place to unplug, than at the beach? We are encouraging San Diegans to be truly present at the beach, if only for a short time. We want everyone to turn off to tune-in, to reconnect with themselves, friends and family and with the incredible beauty of the Pacific Ocean.”

Merriken continued, “We’re honored to partner with San Diego Coastkeeper for this challenge and support its mission to protect local San Diego beaches by keeping them clean and safe for everyone.” In honor of the Cell Phone Surrender, LÄRABAR will make a donation to San Diego Coastkeeper, which protects and restores swimmable, fishable and drinkable waters of the salty seas and beautiful bays of San Diego.

“The beaches of San Diego truly are the jewels of our city. We are grateful to LÄRABAR for encouraging people to surrender their cell phones for the day so they can connect with the astounding beauty of Mission Beach,” said Megan Baehrens, executive director of San Diego Coastkeeper. “We just love LÄRABAR and love that they are presenting this challenge to the people of San Diego.”

The experiment is sure to challenge people’s perception of what “a day at the beach” and “less can be more” can really be.larabar2
