A Taste of San Diego Wines

By  |

Explore the rich, vibrant flavors of San Diego County’s award-winning wines. Throughout the county there are over 115 different wineries that offer the unique microclimate varietals of syrah, grenache, cabernet franc, and other reflections of our Southern California soil. There is a re-birth in the county’s involvement in the world of wine, so now is a great time to explore.

The San Diego County Vintners Association (SDCVA) shares a bit of the history of wine country in San Diego, and a map of the vineyards to explore. They remind us that SD county is bigger in area than Rhode Island and Delaware combined, offering a wide variety of topography including ocean, mountain, and desert. These climates allow San Diego to produce flavors from all different flavor profiles to bloom and flourish. Head to Temecula for concentrated wine tasting, or check out a few of these off-the-beaten-path choices:

Vineyard Highlights

Campo Creek Vineyards | Campo

Campo Creek is tucked in the mountains of East County San Diego, and is the home to almost 10,000 grape vines. Every Saturday and Sunday from 1-5PM they open their doors for the public and invite neighbors to get a taste of their unique wine flavors. They are available for pre-planned group tours during the week as well, to help you celebrate a special occasion or to treat out of town guests. One of their unique varietals is a “pink syrah” — a rose of syrah that they recommend pairing with salmon and pasta. This wine is great for the summer, so why not stop by and give it a try!

Deerhorn Valley Vineyards | Jamul

Feel like you’re part of the family at Deerhorn Valley Vineyards. Bring a picnic lunch to the valley of Jamul and sip some wine with your meal in their Pergola area. Bring a fresh baguette and enjoy their housemade olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Their regular hours are from 11AM-5PM on Saturday’s and Sunday’s, however special appointments can always be made. Stop on by and grab a bottle to take home and share with friends.
