Top Ten Bars in Pacific Beach
San Diego is made up of a bunch of little towns and neighborhoods with each one having its own personality and quirks. Pacific Beach is notorious for being a thriving little beach town full of fun bars and nightlife.
As someone who has spent more than my fare share of time in Pacific Beach, I have grown to love each and every bar for different reasons. Whether you want to relax and drink overlooking the beach, or dance with some beautiful girls, Pacific Beach has anything you are looking for.
Here is a list, in no particular order, of the best bars in Pacific Beach, San Diego, and what each one has to offer.
Baja Beach Cafe
Baja Beach Cafe is the perfect little beach bar and restaurant. You can go there at any hour for food or drinks, and it is always full of fun and happy people. They have a great margarita menu that features over 10 different styles of Margaritas. The view from the patio is one of the best views in all of Pacific Beach. You can see the PB Pier, and you are directly on the boardwalk, allowing for great people watching. The sunset from Baja rivals any other place in San Diego. Once the sun goes down Baja is the perfect place to grab a drink with friends. They have a DJ on staff that plays some classic beach and dance songs, so you can let loose or you can sit in one of the booths and chat. Baja cafe is definitely a must see when in Pacific Beach.
The Tavern is one of the most well-known bars in Pacific Beach. It is situated on Garnet Avenue, the main bar and nightlife street in Pacific Beach. When you walk into Tavern it is almost like you feel at home. Tavern is usually filled with college students and young professionals, giving it a fun, upbeat feel. There are booths, tables and finger foods, and once it gets a little later into the night, a dance floor takes off. Tavern is a great mix of both locals and tourists, so if you are interested in meeting new people you can always find some fun and attractive characters at tavern.
Backyard is the new popular kid in town. It is in one of the best locations in Pacific Beach, located only a block away from the ocean on Garnet avenue. Get to Backyard early though, because a line will form. Once you are inside there are three different bars, a lounge area lit by a unique fireplace, as well as a fun dance floor. Backyard is a great place to start your night after a long day at the beach.
If you are looking for a fun beach bar, then Cantina is the way to go. There are two Cantina bars in Pacific Beach, both located on Garnet Avenue. Each one has great drink specials, and is decked out in hilarious tiki attire. This is a great place to meet younger, single people, and have a good time with friends.
If you’ve ever been to Pacific Beach, then you have at least heard of Shore Club. Shore Club is located at the end of Grand Avenue, directly over looking the beach. A recently renovated outdoor area now allows you to eat and drink outside while overlooking the ocean.
Typhoon gets crazy. If you are looking to dance, make sure you make your way here. Typhoon is full of unique and interesting characters. Typhoon has two separate bars, one in the front of the venue where you can hang out with friends and talk, the other bar is located in the back of the dance floor club area. Typhoon gets a DJ that plays upbeat, fun dance music, and once you get in the back dance floor area feel free to let loose.
Local is a laid back beach bar that turns into a fun dance floor at night. There are two floors to Local, each one with a unique style. When you get inside you are on the first floor of the bar/restaurant. They have drink specials and a great selection of craft beers. Once you get upstairs, the vibe changes a little bit. It is much more upbeat and fun, and the place is usually packed with people dancing.
Millers Field is the perfect place to meet up with friends for a sports game. The bar is full of TVs that are dedicated to whatever current sports event is happening. They also have good drink specials and food. At night, Millers Field is another great place to meet friends. It is a little less crazy than some of the dance-heavy bars like Backyard and Local. The location is perfect because it is situated right on Mission Blvd so you are near the beach and other bars and restaurants.
I’m not sure whether Tap Room would be considered a bar or a restaurant, because it has amazing beers on tap, but also serves delicious food. Located on Garnet Avenue, Tap Room has some of the best pizza in Pacific Beach, as well as a fun and friendly staff, and allows a great place to catch up with friends over a few drinks or some amazing dishes.
Out of all the bars in Pacific Beach, Barrel Republic may be the most unique. Rather than ordering your beer at a bar, you are given a wristband that allows you to walk throughout the bar and pour your own beer or wine from over 40 taps. Each tap has a description of the type of beer, and cost per ounce, so that you can try a little bit before committing to a full pint. Barrel Republic has a laid back vibe where you can chat with friends and play board games. If you’re looking to get blackout drunk on cheap beer, Barrel Republic is not the place to go. If you want to try some unique local brews and have a good chat with a friend over some popcorn, then head to Barrel Republic.
Bubs is a fun and laid back beach bar. It has great drink specials and is a great place to go if you are looking for a casual night out. Located on Garnet Ave, and close to a lot of late night restaurants and food spots, its a great place to go with close friends.
