USD Wine Classic WinesSoon to be a celebrated tradition, the inaugural USD Wine Classic will take place this Sunday from 2-5 pm on the beautiful campus of the University of San Diego. Proceeds from this wine tasting fundraiser will benefit the USD Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund, supporting student scholarships at the university.

Taking advantage of the University of San Diego’s prime location overlooking Mission Bay, the USD Wine Classic will be held outside at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice Garden of the Sea. The location boasts exotic gardens, fountains and sculptures. Tents will be set up for the many wineries participating in the event as well as for the gourmet food stations.

More than 50 wines will be featured from some of California’s best boutique wineries. Some of the wineries participating include: Joseph Phelps, Roar, Charles Krug, Kimmel, Curtis, Caymus, Villa Creek and Whitehall Lane.

A unique aspect to this wine tasting is that most of the wineries are in some way affiliated with the university and many of the wines will be poured by the owners and winemakers. For instance, alumna Kristen Leonardini Kettell ‘87 will pour wines featured from Whitehall Lane, alumnus Andrew Firestone ’98 (you might recognize that name as he was The Bachelor awhile back) will pour wines featured by Curtis Winery, and alumna Annie Weyrich ’07 will pour wines from Martin & Weyrich.

“The caliber of the USD family wineries, the amazing setting, the presence of the winemakers and the USD hospitality is going to make this event special and unique for San Diego,” said Kevin Dooley ’93, Chairman of the USD Wine Classic. “Over the next couple years, we plan to grow this into one of San Diego’s premier annual wine tasting experiences.”

The event will indeed grow next year as many wineries not participating this year are already asking to be included in next year’s line-up of offerings. So if you don’t have a ticket to this year’s event, plan early for next year for this USD Wine Classic is sure to become a highly anticipated tradition in San Diego.
